My guess would be a leaking valve stem oil seal, but I'm no expert.

yup thats a valve stem oil seal matey, replace as a set. they usualy come with a full topend gasket kit....

was going to do seals anyway...thinking the guides might be shot too now

mmmm guides i remeber having to put cylynder heads in the oven for an hour then wearing mums best mitts press the old guides out and press the new one's in.
fortunatley my local engineer is a member of my shooting club happy dayz

I'd say the guides will be knackered as well, also looks to be lots of wear to the valve itself.

Did my Mustang and just had a shop do a valve job. They knurled the head (no valve guides.) Give the shop the seals and they will put them in when they grind/lap the valves.

Probably should have just bought high-flow heads. '88/89 is a bad year for the heads.

Yep, as others have said, guides, seals & valves. Milage dependant, doesn't look like excessive wear, just avaerage.

If (and I guess it will be) an alloy head, you should be able to do it yourself, may need to hire or borrow a valve seat cutter.

just done an LR 200 tdi head, piece of cake, took an afternoon including having it skimmed!

hmm thats an ****...cant really stretch to new valves as well

might jus reuse the other head..its not showing any issues so i will just swap it over i think

There's a lot of oil on that - it's dribbled down when you removed the valve otherwise it wouldn't be on the seating face. I wouldn't see it as a problem. The rest is carbon scum. (For engines I'm a tight git and replace nothing unless it's properly broken).

Why is the head off?

malcolm its a used engine i got for a good price , just giving it a once over and clean best i can before fitting

im pretty sure its not just ran down the valve when taking it apart, some might have added to it , but i recon theres some wear in it

On an old VW, my money's on guide wear, the seals will cure it for a while, but it will be back Local engine place could K-Line them, around £5-8 a pop - unlucky fella, just about the only thing that wears on an old VW petrol cylinder head...unlike the new ones

It's a type of valve guide liner I think.

Hang fire, VW's burn oil rather than have an oil change ( check the service schedule if you don't believe me ), that's why there is such a long interval between oil changes. VW inlet vales often have the oil on them I take it that the piccy is an inlet valve not an exhaust one.

Do you have any pictures of the head and block ?

What was the reason you decided to strip it down ?

Broquet by David Lock is a metalic catalyst in a mesh tube that is dropped in the fuel tank , it aligns the fuel molecules and gives fantastic clean burn results as well as clean valves and ports.

Just seen the recent post of piccies looks like you posted whilst I was one fingering it ...
The plugs look to be coping OK with the " oil " so I'd say no great prob , even a couple of tanks of carb cleaner additive would get rid of most of that.

Do you have any piccies of the exhaust pipe as well as the manifold

Did you do a wet & dry compresion test before stripping down ?
