Makita angle grinder 18v?

thanks for the input,it is much appreciated.
I currently have a 18v 4ah drill and I've had it a few years and it has never let me down.
it get used regularly. I always keep one spare battery fully charge.
the body wont be Makita but a Chinese copy.(it seem most tools are made in China anyway.)
was thinking of getting a brushless one anyway but not for the reason that you guys says.
just to try it out but now that you've all mention brushless is better.
I wont be using the grinder a lot just now and then.
not sure on batteries though. so called genuine till you start to read the listing only to find its not genuine.

By and large you're kidding yourself buying fake Makita batteries. Been there, done that and that's with a few different fake battery makes. Floureon are the only ones that came close to the originals. Two 5Ah fakes I bought died with a couple of months with no recourse, compensation etc.

Wait until Screwfix have their drill and 2 5Ah battery offer on special. At the mo "on sale" for circa £169.99 but that seems steep as they've had the deal way lower, like £129.99. Maybe this is just indicative of general price rises.

At one point it was cheaper than buying two genuine batteries separately and you in effect got the drill for free (which you could then sell).

they are very hit or miss, i have had a few of the knock off batteries that out lived genuine ones and even seemed to have near enough the same capacity, but then have had ones that weigh half as much and most certainly do not have 5Ah !!
Also had one that showed zero volts, luckily i pulled it apart out of curiosity, turned out a solder joint melted off, just needed re soldering!

Whilst there is a lot to be said for 4" grinders, there are a lot more disc options for the 4 1/2" (115mm). If I was looking for a first cordless grinder for general use, it would probably be a 115mm.

NOTE: From 115mm upwards, spindles are m14 and discs have a 22mm hole. 100mm spindles ars m10 and the disc hole is 16mm.

I've got two fake grinders, (one orange and one turquoise ) that take Makita batteries.

Can't fault them. They do tend to be a bit lacking on the grease in the head gears so worth checking that and if it gets noisy etc. In fact just about to do one of mine.

Regreased mine a while ago, makes them a bit quieter!

Instead of regreasing mine I found myself at the pub. Ironic as whilst up there found the landlady's garden trellis had collapsed. Volunteered to have a crack at making a new one tomorrow out of this stack of 25mm box here!

A ring roller is what I really need to make!

used to use makita religiously until they stiffed you with the batteries warranty
tried 18v xr dewalt and never looked back, the power is ridiculous on the brushless stuff,milwaukee stuff is as good but normally twice the price
but for grinders i would be looking at metabo

What issue have you had there?
I moved from DeWalt to Makita after I bought the very first gen li-ion DeWalt’s, then shortly after they changed design so all the batteries were not compatible. I’ve got both modern platforms now but have to say DeWalt warranty have been a nightmare, Makita just swap stuff out no issue.
I threatened to go into DeWalts office at one point in Slough, when they finally accepted fault, they sent the wrong bloody thing, took months! Makita just email, post to Milton Keynes and get it back, they usually replace stuff well out of warranty or will offer cheap repairs.

Metabo make nice gear but just not worth buying if you want a whole platform although that has improved with the compatible batteries they are now using. Cembre use the Metabo batteries in their newer line crimpers.

I mean, not really, usually they don't suffer wear like the brushed ones do to start with and if anything dies it'll usually be the control mosfets in the trigger in which case a £20 trigger swap sorts it out.

Metabo have the CAS (cordless alliance system)
Bosch have the AmpShare system (fein, dremel etc) so in those platforms the expensive batteries do seem to be interchangeable with a large range of tools.

But, if you look into it deeper they are only actually sharing between companies that are all owned by the same parent group.
There is not actually much more variation of tools as it seems to be the same things just rebadged as different brands.

All the ones I have seen have been either the bearings in the (sealed) motor, the motor itself with no visible issues, or something in the (potted) electronic control unit.
Never been lucky enough to just replace a trigger and get it working again!

Both the ecu and the motor spare parts prices pretty much write the tool off.
Obviously I don't actually scrap them, they just pile up in my shed waiting for the chinese to release a £19.99 replacement motor...

Just to add, i tried a fakita brushless grinder, it was absolute garbage, the switch failed quickly and it was just awful. Waste of money unless it's strictly for hobby/diy use.
The genuine brushless variable speed bodies are excellent though. I've got 2 and brother has another 2, they get more use than anything else does.

I also have them in the 240 versions as well. I think you need to manage your expectations where batteries are concerned. If I know I’m going to be giving one a good workout I’ll just take the corded one

the reason I prefer 4" is its easier to handle and I have no problem getting pads.
I still have my corded Makita grinder 4" and a maktec 4.5".
these two I will put away in the drawer.
I also have a 4.5" matabo grinder. bought that for my son but doesn't want it.
I've used it a couple of times but I'll be selling that as well as my percussion drill.
the drill I used mostly for tapping as its a reversing drill ideal for tapping out threads.
I'll stick both of them on Face Book as I don't think I'm allowed to sell on here..

True for most tools,
Some of the stuff like grinders and big circular saws it's an issue though.
Some of the panels I cut with my track saw you only get 2 cuts out of an 8ah.

At work most days 4 batteries will easily see the day through and that’s with a radio on one. It’s in the garden at home I munch through them, 2x each in the strimmer, blower, chainsaw, 4x in the mower.
The garden pro’s running battery tools tend to use the back pack power supplies so if you really need to run constantly but stay portable that’s possibly the way to go, PITA on a grinder i should imagine.
