Bike frame primer?

I'll get the Can Am frame back from media blasting soon along with the alloy hubs, wheels etc. So I want to get some primer on it, and then later it'll have NATO green top coat applied. Given how little painting I do, or want to if I'm honest, and also the fact that it's not going to require a shiny super smooth finish (top coat will be satin). Any recommendations for etch and/or high build primers available in aerosol cans?

Any 'regular' shiny paintwork I farm out. So even though aerosols will work out more expensive to apply than using a gun it just doesn't make sense with the additional faff of cleaning and a gun sitting on the shelf unused for years.

Just had a quick check and the Euro Car Parts around the corner from the workshop stock the range of U-Pol primers which is handy.

There are quite a few different paints in that range. I'd definitely choose the zinc phosphate primer for bare metal, but I don't which one it is - totally useless naming system, but pretty good products. take a look at their website.

Surely you wouldn't choose zinc phosphate over 2k epoxy. I've used zinc phos, it's very good but 2k epoxy is on another level.

Before I answer that question, can you confirm that there is actually a 2k in that U-pol range??? Suspect not?

I know that there are many 2k's (and no, I don't use them), but in general, what do they use as corrosion inhibitors, e.g. zinc phosphate or some equivalent?

There are 1k epoxy primers on sale but I wouldn't believe that they are any better than any other 1k product. The real 2 part epoxy primers cannot be beaten.

Me neither, but I wouldn't use aerosols as I am sure you wouldn't!

£70 a litre sounds expensive at first glance, but compare it tot he cost of the alternative and it's quite reasonable. Gun, gun cleaner, paint and thinners to put half a litre on a frame as a one off job just doesn't stack up.

yep; it's quite a range and when I looked over it I didn't spot the 2k; at £28 per tin, I'd probably lost my concentration.

Whilst I see and understand the point you are making; on a 'bike frame, you would only use about 250mL, the rest will last for years. You could even brush it if you had no spraying facilities. Even so, a primer gun isn't going to cost a lot and cleaning is pretty straight forward. That aerosol is scrap an hour or so after opening, regardless of how little has been used and you have to buy another next time you want some.

I disagree. Tip it upside down to purge, lasts months.

I always do that with paints, works fine even the following year

That is +2k+ paint in an aerosol. You pull a tab to release the hardener into the paint just before use. In a couple of hours, the whole lot goes hard. Your response only applies to air dried paints.
