Call out today. Wheel bearing gone on a tipper trailer, this is what I found.

The axle end has snapped off.

That is what I thought but was unsure. How the hell did it not fall off the trailer then?

It did ,the driver didn't notice for 1/4 mile luckily on a farm track.

New axle time. That's the only repair I'd be happy with doing on that.

Send it off to India and they'll weld it up while turning it in a shagged out Colchester lathe. Probably cost about £25 with shipping.

I was thinking soft solder with a nice clean break like this.

My guess is probably not that much in terms of when it's not tipped.
The issue will likely be stuck loads that when tipped, has all that weight over the back axle, and combined with some dubious tipping practices, will have grossly overloaded that axle.

We had a batch of twin axle winches shear the rear axles at work in a similar way, because the operators refused to follow the official guide and uncouple them from the vehicle. Instead they left them coupled to the vehicle, didn't put down the hydraulic stabiliser legs, and relied on the trailer axle taking the force of a 20 tonne winch.
Those winches were replaced with single axle ones, which they had no option but to follow official practice, otherwise the whole lot would be upside down if not secured correctly.

Thats a balanced trailer,as in virtually no drawbar weight. Probably been hammered across rough ground at 50kph.

A local farmer bought a new ATV trailer for carting sheep etc, about. New design with what looked like road tyres, as he wanted to do road work between his two farms (5miles apart). Only had it a few weeks and one axle sheared. On checking he found the tyres were still supposed to be blown up to 5psi, because they still provided the suspension, like the earlier balloon type. He had blown them up to 35psi because they looked like truck tyres.
