Tragic news story that has resulted in BMW pulling out of the UK police car market.

N57 engines could catch fire “under police pursuit driving conditions” (apparently no risk to consumers ) with 5-7 engine failures a month!

Totally astonishing that this couldn’t have been addressed much earlier.

There's not one part of that that makes me think that it would be ideal for a pursuit vehicle.

The decision not to withdraw the vehicles was probably a perfectly good decision at the time.
Any high performance vehicle driven hard regularly, will be prone to catastrophic failure. Look at how often race engines need rebuilt to maintain performance and reliability.

A few years ago we maintained some police cars, and the rapid response ones would typically need new engines around 80k, after failing in some form or another.

I suspect the reason they say it doesn't concern civilian vehicles, is it's only a problem when driven for prolonged periods at high speed, which off course, civilian vehicles should never legally do..

The N57 motor is a tried and tested unit and found in the X5 too, also Range rover vogue had the motor. Ive had a couple and the latest was in my stage 3 E60 535D. If i was going to design a motor for pursuit vehicles then it would be the very same unit. Don't know the exact reason why they burst into flames in cop cars but would be very interested to read the in-depth technical report instead of Daily Mail type reporting.

I'm not up with the newer stuff. But for hard graft I would go for an S50 over a lined S52

when i was a lad they had mini vans 3 and a half rovers and ford Anglia used to leave them standing being chased on my norton with a dirty numberplate had a switch on the back light you could turn off when been chased

And if the engines weren't knackered they had a hole drilled through the side of the block to make sure there were no come backs.

From what I've read some forces are looking at Volvo V90 & XC90 and VW Toureg

Noooo, Senator's they ran them for 200k they were that reliable, when GM announced they were discontinuing the Senator the cops ordered over 400 for stock

It’s the X5 that is going to be hard to replace as an ARV as that was the only thing on the market with the performance and that would cope with the extra weight, at the time.
