electronic brake motor wind back

need to replace the rear disks and pads on peugeot partner van. can anyone see a problem just unplugging the motor and run a couple of leads to it of a battery and rewind the motor back i cant see it damaging any electronics on the vehicle by unplugging . cant see on u tube anything about disabling it through settings on the dash

realy its just a 12 volt dc motor i presume so just swapping the polarity will make it go one way or the other

Maybe but if it's a self-adjusting system the servo motor might only turn a limited amount and use a ratcheting system of some kind to self-adjust, bit like a conventional rear brake adjuster. I dunno if I would risk smoking the electrics without doing some research.

Whilst the motor might be simple the controller might be monitoring its relative position.

On the Audi the caliper motor consists of 12V DC motor and hall effect sensor (to measure motor revolutions) terminated in a 4pin connector. So in theory you could just connect 12V to run the motor in reverse - you'd want to be careful not to overdrive it and jam mechanism.

However, when you fit new pads (or re-fit old ones for that matter) you use the VCDS to program the thickness of the pad, the ECU then counts motor revolutions and thus monitors pad wear to indicate when they need replacing.

Did a bit of holiday cover for a pal at his garage a few years back. Bloke did a brake pad change on a merc. Used a windback tool

Was over £1000 a corner if I remember right. You will likely need a computer to wind them in. You need to be 100% you don’t before you do it manually!

I’ve done two Passats….one on a 13 plate,the other a 19…
I split the motor from the caliper, wound the piston back, fitted the pads/caliper and the refitted the motor….no bother.

Preparatory operations​

• Release EPB:
  • Use manufacturer's or equivalent diagnostic equipment to retract rear brake caliper parking brake mechanisms.
• Ensure ignition switched OFF.
• Disconnect battery.
• Draw off sufficient brake fluid from brake fluid reservoir to enable rear brake caliper pistons to be reset.

Brake pad removal and fitting​

Note: Refer to "Technical specifications" for brake disc and drum dimensions.

• Remove rear wheels.
• Disconnect EPB actuator harness multi-plug.
• Detach rear brake caliper from caliper carrier. Move brake caliper aside and support with wire.
• Remove rear brake pads. If brake pads are to be re-used ensure they are marked to enable them to be re-fitted to their original positions.
• Remove anti-rattle springs.
• Press rear brake caliper piston fully in. DO NOT turn brake caliper piston.

Note: When fitting new brake pads, fit new anti-rattle springs.

• Fit anti-rattle springs.
• Fit brake pads. Ensure caliper piston aligns with brake pad locator pin.
• Fit rear brake caliper to caliper carrier. Tightening torque: Refer to "Technical specifications".
• Connect EPB actuator harness multi-plug.
• Fit rear wheels. Tightening torque: Refer to "Technical specifications".
• Connect battery.
• Switch ignition ON.
• Erase any stored trouble codes.
• Start engine. Operate brake pedal until resistance is felt.
• Top up brake fluid. Refer to "Technical specifications".
• Switch ignition OFF.

Those are the official instructions, which state diagnostic equipment is to be used.
If it wasn't needed (some vehicles don't need calipers wound back electrically, and some can be wound back via a magic combination of switches/buttons/menus/pedals), the various automotive tech data sources would tell you that (I'm guessing @premmington go those ones from Autodata).

But the ultimate answer is I've always used the diagnostic kit on those vans, as the manufacturer's instructions state diagnostic equipment must be used.
You can try bodging it, but I personally wouldn't be risking it, given the potential costs should something go wrong.

If OP brightspark were closer - he could do it at my workshop - and I would wind them back for him FOC with scan tool (gladly).

The boss asked me to fit some new pads to his Freelander. It had electric handbrake so I had an idea that it wouldn't be simple. Googled it and the instructions were a strange combination of pressing pedals, switches, etc. Not that difficult, worth a Google anyway.

We just geared up here - with uptodate scan tools for service work.

The problem with - driving them with the plugs off with a battery is - the main EPB module will think the calipers are "forward". You replug them and it is a "lottery" what happens next...
