There's no need to involve a solicitor at all if you have someone you trust who you can name as executor. I was named as executor and arranged everything when a close relative passed on, fees were very low (under £200 from memory), I spent lots of time spent checking old statements and contacting the banks to trace funds, then paid outstanding bills, the remainder was shared out as listed in the will.
If you are thinking of leaving anything to charity, check to see how much is passed on to the "deserving causes" and how much is swallowed up by the admin costs of the charity & staff (there was a great website that showed for each charity the % "lost" and % "doing good work" but I can't find the website now)
