old helmet

Hi,I bought a Chint auto-darkening helmet back in 2007,($150 was a lot of money back then)and never got to use it.If i replace the batteries,would this helmet still be safe to use?
I'm just a (very) occasional welding plodder.I just tried the tv remote test,and it made the screen flash "on and off".Does that mean dead batteries?thanks.

Change the batteries.

See if it works.

You won't go blind.

Or point a TV remote control at it.

The IR and UV should be filtered wheather the screen triggers dark or not by the type of plastics used.
Triggering a lid can be difficult, best just to try welding and see.

However new cheap lids have improved massively, with relatevely decent true colour ones at 30 quid. If your going to spend any time welding, sell or bin the old one!

As a matter of introduction,I'm Hans,71 years old,and a former bus driver.I've always been interested in mechanical things,and models in particular.My welding experience is minimal,being just an enthusiast having a go.I've had a 140A arc welder unit for 30 odd years,with only minimal use.Recently,on facebook there was an ad for a super cheap 5-in1 welder,so i though I'd risk it,and ordered one.According to the tracking,it's supposedly on the slow boat from china,so we'll see what happens.At $50,I thought it was worth the risk of it being a con.My intention is mainly to weld up to 2mm sheet metal into bodies for 1/14th scale radio control trucks,now my main hobby.
I think I'll just bin the old helmet,and fork out $40-50 on a new one.Apparently they are much better quality then even 15 years ago.

Thank you for the introduction. For 50 notes, it may or may not turn up. Remember, they will be Chinese amps ans may not be accurate. Post some pictures up of the trucks on here. We like pictures

The red Daf is a Tamiya kit chassis with a 3d printed cab,the body and trailer scratchbuilt.The Green Knight hauler tipper has been converted to day cab from a tamiya kit,with a tipper body from alixpress,and hydraulic actuation.The others are standard Tamiya kits.

After all that,the batteries i had placed in the helmet turned out to be old stock i had in the drawer.Once I threw those out,and replaced them with new ones,the helmet works perfectly.Yoohoo.My $50 welder is currently on it's way to the local delivery depot,so hopefully in my hot little hands before the end of the week.Only thing is,I'll have to spend around $400 for a co2 bottle,another 100 for a new welding jacket,and possibly some new wire.I've read somewhere that the quality of the Chinese wire can be variable.We'll see.
