No, it's all good apart from the slack in the cross slide nuts which is why I'm trying to think of a use for it really. I just needed a metric lathe capable of cutting threads (occasionally) so the S&B isn't really suitable for the bits I need to do.

Is it any use as a beginner's practice tool? Just to learn the principles and make shavings.

So far @hotponyshoes idea is winning for me. I like the idea of being able to cut a keyway.

This is it when it arrived, it's a bit cleaner now and the cross slide is stripped for inspection.

Do a restoration on it - most things can be fixed. Easy enough to get a new nut and acme thread for the cross slide.
They can be super accurate with the collets. Do some Clickspring type stuff.

It doesn't really need restoration IMHO, I'm not really fond of the 'newly painted old machinery' thing.

That's just the cross slide nuts and the threads, everything else looks/works/sounds good with very little wear. It's pure guesswork, but I think either it's not the original slide or it was used to do something which loaded it up and they over did it. Knurling maybe?

Make up a lever operated tool holder thingy on the cross slide, then you can make internal keyways like a shaper. Works for me..

Forward (slow & fast), neutral, reverse (slow & fast). Lathe manufacturers back then did seem to make it up as they went along.

That would be handy on mine. Reverse particularly.

Yeah, I'm liking that idea more and more. It'd take some working out and adapting but I can't see why it wouldn't be achievable to have a set up for internal and external keyways.

Here's mine, I'm cutting graduations in a new lead screw dial for my lathe.

It would be nice to have a dedicated machine to avoid faffing around fitting it every time.

You could make a much more robust version would be good.

Finding more uses for it all the time.

Quite a few different models of the L were sold. I did plan on chucking a 2hp 3p motor in it and running a vfd for fwd/rev etc.
