Is it rude to ask for 100% payment up front I've been asked to quote for some wall top railings putting on a fair communities land it's a pretty big job for me as the railings are 4.5m long and made from 25x25 box to match one they have already made so there pretty big and sturdy with it being such a big job I've had trouble pricing it and people have put doubt in my head if I would get paid the final balance at the end is it rude to ask for 100% up front

If you are unsure about the client it wouldn’t be out of the way to ask for a 50% deposit to cover materials and the rest upon delivery. It all needs to be in the terms/conditions and written confirmation of acceptance if you want to avoid the bun fight.

hes meaning funfair community whilst they arnt the travelers side of it id still becareful

You have to ask yourself why didn't they go back to whoever made the first one.

I would say there will be a big chance that once you deliver the goods they will start trying to bargain the price down.

Even if you do get the money up front don't assume that will be the end of it.

It’s 50% up front here and rest on delivery unless I know you etc.

One bloke I’ve never worked for has just got me to do a load of titanium stuff. Asked for materials up front. Didn’t even blink. That tells me a lot

Exactly that. If you have a half decent reputation, no client that's worth working for would consider 50% up front to be in any way unreasonable.

I'd never convert clean metal stock into a custom part for an unknown client without some cash up front.

Fairground people and "Caravan Utilising Nomadic Types Seen" are very different. I deal with Danter's as well as another big one whose name is on the tip of my tongue, locally at Over Brdge and have never had the slightest problem. On the contrary, every one of them (bar one, but you always get one!) Are the most honourable, decent people that you could want for customers. They have nothing to do with the other lot whatsoever.

I always ask for 50% up front before I touch any material.
If they don't like that it's Tata from me.
Being owed half is a good incentive to get cracking as well

Had one proper traveler bilk years (50) ago, they burnt his van, and I was paid by the boss man, was told you treats us OK so we treat you the same.
Never dealt with hedgers though

A kitchen company round here, wants 50% when you order, 25% on delivery rest on completion of fitting.

id ask myself why have they had one made maybee they thought it was overpriced and had a fallout and you may do them cheaper . how many need making . if you go ahead you want the price of the materials upfront and in none payment you have only lost your labour

and still have a nice fence to sell to recoup the labor too

I have no problem with "showman" or "circus" people.

I have done lots of work over decades for these types of people and have always been paid. Good customers.

I even do several cars/vans for a big family of settled "romany gypsies" - nice people - it takes a little while to agree a price - but once a deal is agreed - they honour there half to the nail - they are OK.
