I bought a set of multi purpose step ladders ,,, 36 warning labels on them .... far too many idiots wearing hse badges ,,,
say nowt is sound advise ,, after all the oil came from the ground , its really just made a break for home ,,, a wheel barrow of horse dung planted beside the tank would help too of course ,,,
not help with the leak or the problem , but it would sure hide the smell for a while ,,,

Could it be that her previous leaking plastic tank was not the problem?
If it has leaked, the next time you get heavy rain it will come up and be very visible and spread on the surface. Do you want it in your garden too?
If I were her, I would do a small test dig by the pipe, and the pipe will need replacing anyway if it did leak.
While the ground is dry it may be possible to suck some of it out and filter it for use. Thats a lot of oil, hopefully contained in a small area.

I once lost 550 gallon of diesel into my bilges ,,, it was quite an event to step into my engine room and have what I initially thought was water level with the engine beds ,,, bit oily looking and a strong smell ,, yep one of my tanks drained ,,, I just pumped it all back into the tank after swapping the offending ball valve , once it was polished it was grand ,,, I certainly wasnt throwing it over the side . it would have taken a lot of washing up liquid to get rid of that rainbow ,,, not sure I would even try in the mud though.

We spent a winter at Cribbs Causeway traveller site, ex MOD diesel storage I believe, M32, Bristol, stickiest mud you've ever seen.

Don't know when it was done (definitely over 10 years ago), but when oil feed was laid under the patio, the pipe wasn't long enough so they put 2 compression joints in it. When we had the patio replaced we found 1 of the joints had leaked, new pipe laid - inside existing conduit - smell dissipated after 2 days and new patio laid. Will be interesting to see how far through the winter, before I need to refill, without a leaking pipe.

I spilled a basin with about 2 litres of kerosene in my yard a few months ago, the oil slick appears everytime it rains and grows in size each time, honestly if you'd been here last week when it rained you wouldn't believe it was caused by just 2 litres. I think if 500 litres leaked it'd be easy to find

Given how dry the ground is now it will have probably gone deep. Deep enough to find the water table, so it'll either be nearly at the sea or being pumped up for Mr & Mrs Blogg's cup of tea.
On a serious note, if it has contaminated the ground or water table and gets discovered they'll trace the spill and keeping quiet about it will end up a very expensive choice. Especially as any insurance would be void due to not declaring in a timely manner.

It also helps calm troubled waters. The surface tension of the oil is greater than the surface tension of water
My boat had two oil tanks , one each side and a hand pump for dispensing whale oil to work as spray suppression when coming along side on a service in gales ,, now whether it worked or not I dont know , but the RNLI wouldnt have fitted them if they didnt work ,,, so theres science behind the saying after all.
