Well spade handles actually rather than candles.
Are the reputable brand replacement handles any better than the amazon specials?
Guess this is sort of aimed at @The_Yellow_Ardvark as you seem to fit a lot of handles

I would suggest walking into a Hardware Store or Iron mongers and actually looking at replacement. What you can't guarantee when buying on line is that the grain in the wood is running continuously lengthwise in the proper direction, or if its warped.

Edit: The same goes for axe and hammer handles etc..

I’m in the same boat at the moment so watching with interest. Lent a neighbour a spade but he didn’t tell me what he was going to use it for. Tried to lever a fence post concrete lump with it and snapped it off. Had the cheek to say it was rotten!
They do straight and tapered ends so be aware.

Mines tapered.. had gone loose so just removed the rivets and intended to shave a bit off and refit.. but I will loose too much length
It's an elwell that was my dad's, so more sentimental than really necessary

You can buy the rivets as well. Not that cheap actually.

If you are in an agricultural area a farm supplies store is your best bet for decent quality handles.
When we had a village blacksmith , sadly prematurely departed, he was a wiz at fitting handles to spades etc. Rivets would go in red hot, preened over so that they pulled it all tight when they contracted.

I get mine from a local old fashioned Hard ware shop in town.
The cheep ones are easy to spot, they are warped.

The mid range ones are not much differance between them. The finish is the biggist diferance.

My dad still as the fork, spade and extra wide shim that old blacksmith in next village made probably 40 + years ago. Still all on original shafts.

I haven't seen replacement handles available for anything in yonks, pickaxe shaft or broom handle is just about all you will get around here.

I’ve bought several over the last year,all off e bay,can’t find the name,it was a hardware supplier with good feedback,all have smooth straight grain,ash I presume.

most ag suppliers round hear stock spade handles, i think they come from faithful?
a few years ago when i had more time i used to have my number up in their for re-handleing things axes and spades mostly and you would be suprised how many i got in to do! 5-10 a week most weeks.

also never hot rivet a spade shaft in, the rivet will char the wood and then work lose when the charred wood falls away....just peen them nice and tight, a 6 inch nail is what i used to use for spade rivets!

Ag supplier here carries most handles.

Sledge handles have dried up it seems. Can’t get them for love nor money. I’ve a couple of heads need re mounting but have one or two hammers to keep me going

I get all my handles from Amazon, tend to be faithfull as said previously.

Hammer handles hickory, fork and spade ash, grain seems good and not broken one yet and I do abuse them.

Called at a tool suppliers in Darlington yesterday and they had a big tub full of all manner of wooden handles but it seems replacing handles is a dying art these days .

Apparently most folk would rather throw the old one away and buy a new implement that has a fibre glass handle that's held in with epoxy . Which reminds me that I found a14lb hammer head in a scrap yard in Sunderland last week that needs a new handle, and it will most definitely be a wooden one .
