Is there any potential tax or duty involved in buying from Southern Ireland?

Hi all. I've got a quick question. I've seen some old computer memory for sale on eBay in Dublin, but I'm reading all sorts of conflicting stuff on the internet about what the rules are concerning getting anything posted from there to Mainland England at the minute. I'm just wondering if anyone knows if it was possible/likely that I'd get hit with import duty (Or any other charges) if I got them?

The total price (With postage) would be under 20 quid, and it's used items that I assume would be sent in a jiffy bag.

Has anyone got any experience of buying stuff from over there lately?

They're the same brand, model, speed, timings, and voltage as the memory I want to add to in my other PC, but just a different revision number. They SHOULD be happy working along with the 4gb that's already in there.......... It's just not quite as certain a certainly as the 100% identical sticks that are in Ireland.

Im under the impression ebay takes care of it, the price you see for any import goods already includes the VAT, same as anything from china. The new vat/tax rules are quite specific for ebay and kther marketplaces, it is paid for with the item rather than with delivery.

So, you should have zero problems, if its an ebay and packaged with an ebay printed label, rather than, hand written address.

Thanks for the offer, but because of the uncertainty around this whole tax thing I've just gone with a second best option that doesn't involve it crossing boarders.

It's annoying as hell because I've bought shedloads of electronics from China and several tools from the US over the years, and knowing if you were likely to incur duty (And how much) used to be pretty simple, but now, even our own governments websites can't explain what the rules are clearly.

@Kram is correct, it's known as the IOSS system, your purchase should include VAT, the seller needs to quote the IOSS number on the customs label to prevent you having to pay twice. If the label is auto-generated then should be pre-filled.

We left the corrupt EU, I don't think China and the US were in that so buying from them is no different I believe

You shouldn't be paying VAT on a second hand item, buying new from the states incurs their local taxes as well, by the times you've paid import duties and transportation the item can cost 2-3 times it's value, I don't know how the Chinese do it. Of course this all might change as this government is intent upon flouting international trade rules which is why .gov does not know the rules.

We all know it isn’t as simple as planning to flout international trade rules - so making these kinds of statements is just being political. I doubt anyone living in NI is happy with the situation as it is at the moment.

It is my understanding that China has some sort of "Developing nation" status, which is why imports are so cheap.
