Me & Mrs are members of the national trust. I do enjoy seeing the old metal work. Here's some today. None of the gates as they were miles away from the parking.

Plenty of very ornate lead work and lead casting at Waddesdon today. Along with a beautiful cast iron aviary.

The spires on the roof are completely lead and were bouquets of flowers around vases.

Ironic that they probably wouldn’t be allowed these days due to health and safety!

I had an interview a few years ago with a firm that specialises in high end metalwork restoration. Looking at some of their work and client base was pretty impressive.

I did too, we’re based in Dorset by any chance? I was a bit concerned as during the tour they showed me the workshop manager’s office which was fine, a little timber stud wall affair in a corner, what bothered me was that the lathe was on the chipboard roof with access by a ladder

I'm sure my best mate worked at Waddesdon at some point. He was a restoration wood botherer for 36 years. Worked for Linfords. I think he told me that the leadwork had a lot of replacement. It was a fair few years back though.

Yeah a lot of it looked very well maintained, so likely not all original. Then again it's not actually that old, 1880 odd.

Absolutely stunning! Lots of amazing old stately homes/castles around the UK but that's a stand-out. Pity it's so far away.

I've missed visiting NT places through the pandemic and looking forward to visiting more soon now things are settling down. We kept up our membership because they need the cash with no visitors.
I always cast an eye over the wrought iron work, and there's always plenty of it. I enjoy working out how it was forged. Nerd!

I must admit, As members of a re-enactment group. We sometimes get paid to appear at NT/EH properties. Downside is, we normally only see the field outside where we pitch our camp. This is Bolsover, with the full show.

We got our NT during covid for the parking and open spaces. We had been saying about joining for years and finally did.

Problem with Stately homes is, they are Big, expensive to run, and there are too many!
Let me explain a bit more. Nearly all of them, build around the same time (1750-1850) are built to a common plan. Big house with servants quarters, Stable block, Walled garden, Lake, Ice house, Home farm, lots of little gatehouses, Fence/wall round the whole estate 'Landscaped by Capability Brown' (guy must have had a jet and a JCB) Unless it is an exceptional example of it's type, NT/EH won't want to add to their portfolio as It dilutes the visitor experience, seeing the same type of thing over and over. We, as re-enactors, can do our bit to enhance your day. Take Bolsover as an example, As a purely living history group, we won't increase the footfall. (the donkey wallopers do that). But we will increase the dwell time, You, The public, (MOPS) then buy more cups of coffee, another sandwich/meal at the on-site café. Therefore increasing venue at the site.

We went there last year but it was raining
Did you see the spiral staircase or the generator room?
We stayed at the 5 Arrows hotel just up the road, look at the brickwork on these chimneys!

Awesome stuff.

I used to know who made the bricks for that, I THINK it was the same brickmaker who did Hampton court place. I know a guy who can date and tell you who made the bricks

My sister, who we’re staying with at Hampton, loves re-enactor groups, as you say they help keep the public there spending money.
