Self leveling compund

I'm looking for one that won't set up quickly, I'm not in a rush, and self levels well.

I used one from Wickes a few months ago but wasn't impressed.

Does anyone have a recommendation?

None of this self levelling gear will work well if the substrate is porous and draws the moisture out of it before its had a chance to self level, best results I have had with this is when the floor is drowned in SBR beforehand.

Ok, the thickness needed will from 0 to 5mm or so, its a 120 year old concrete floor that needs levelled before I put on a new raised wooden floor. The back area of this room will be a shower room, I'm putting in the new raised (150mm or so) wooden floor to give me the space under the floor for the shower waste pipe etc.

The existing concrete undulates all ways.

Closer up, a new partition wall will be put in at the edge of the laminate flooring.

a wet coat of sbr then floor leveler will stick like sh it to a blanket the sbr will waterproof it and seal from porosity as well as a good bond

If your going over it with joists don't bother just use plastic packers where required it's only 5mm? unless it's good timber it's going to shrink

A thread on here, was recommended this stuff. We used SBR first. As for self leveling, it wasnt bad, but you do need to go at it with a roller, and I think thats true for all of them. We got good results, used tiles ontop.

I liked the Mapei but it is twice the price of the cement based ones I had to buy due to no stock.

I used Setcrete high performance compound on my extension screed floor as it's fiber reinforced and I glued the new oak flooring to it, it's strong stuff but it really doesn't self level like you think it will. If you have a 5mm drop across one end of the room it's quite hard to get it truly level.
I'd just do as @Blobber says and level the timber with packers to get it spot on.

Didn't someone on here suggest using SBR Bond AS a leveller on a previous thread - or am I making stuff up??

(I need to seal and improve the surface of the (pretty level, but far from level & smooth) concrete floor in my 4m x 4m workshop - and I'm pretty sure someone said SBR would do it)?

it will seal it for dust and waterproof one or 2 coats . wont build up uneven surfaces though

If you want to level out floor compound your best friend is a spiky roller. Pour and trowel your compound then use the roller to make the surface smooth out locally and help remove air bubbles. A big mistake to make is to think that you can just put down the compound and it will level itself off everywhere like a bowl of water. It won't do that the stuff is too viscous.

The roller helps massively but wont get it dead flat. I think ours was a couple mm out but you'd never know with the tiles down. I did have to apply more adhesive at one end than the other.

I wont be using our roller again, just taking space. It was 23 quid new, 600mm wide, and was cleaned off so its like new.

I have not tried this idea, but to put some wood guides screwed down, pour and roller, then skim the top against the wood, it should quite flat done that way.

Spoke to my Dad about it, he said forget the leveling compund, put down 3 "wall plates" perpendicular to the joists and bolt to the floor. Then, notch out the joists to get them level across the plates.

Job done, I got it all within about +/- 1mm.
