That depends... I have to go around the house twice a week resetting the TRVs which have been wound wide open by 'indoors.

Yea I've got one of those indoors too!

TRVs are always being messed with ...except the one in the bedroom which is "broken!"...but what "someone" doesn't realise is I've pre set the max temperature using the supplied pin restrictor .....but I keep having to put off "repairing" it.

Its also the same in the car....I get an hour into my journey and I feel like I'm coming down with the flu...nope....climate has been set to "Hi". I've tried explaining that the car won't heat up any quicker...and to get to "Hi" it has to go through "reasonable" at exactly the same pace as if it had been set to "reasonable" all along!

Someone recently theorised that the reason is that the heating cannot be working unless all the radiators are hot. I have given up trying to explain thermostatic control, I might as well be Nuclear physics as far as her interest goes.

My valves in the other house could have the knob fitted to any rotational position, so she always thought that they were flat out. The ones here cannot be fudged like that though.

Mine came with a pin that allows you to lock out the maximum setting (pin is underneath so not visible once fitted)....very handy...but you also need to spin a tale about water leaks if the valves are ever unscrewed!

My "great" idea was to over-spec all the rads and then use TRVs to control the room temperatures....I won't be doing that in the next house thats for sure!

I'm lucky in that regard. My bedroom is a mezzanine in the living room.

There was a study carried out as part of a big office refurb
If the radiators didn't have covers on them, all the members of the fairer sex considered the office cold if the radiators were not scalding, the actual temperature was irrelevant

When the radiators were replaced with covered LST radiators they found the wall thermostat had to be on 30 or, again the fairer sex, complained it was cold, without a thermostat it was ALWAYS cold, regardless of the actual temperature

The solution? Each office was fitted with a mechanical thermostat that made a very audible click when the temperature was increased, the complaints of the office being cold stopped

No one told the staff members the thermostats were not connected to anything and the temperature was set with a BMS

Most of the houses my wife lived in were without central heating so I don't suffer the above . Our thermo sits at 16 through the day and 13 overnight. 6:30am it cranks up to 19 for an hour.

And this 2kW electric heater is any different? I was comparing the economics of the decision. Radiators are all fitted with stop valves, aren’t they? Yes, it requires leccy to run the pump and boiler - but that should all be taken into account when doing an energy/cost balance.

actually no not on some systems

gravity fed systems have no power usage as they use heat rises

leccy is used more nowadays on stupid controlers and power to the boiler and pump

hive systems and also thermostatic controllers on your rads

Ive got an estimated price increase from my current energy supplier who is scary, but if we get the £150 back from our council tax it works out as a 13% increase which seems more paletable.

The price of a barrel of oil has doubled, over here.
I don't know if that means all energy related prices will end up double or not.

Oil prices rise and fall all the time, its traded as a commodity. Prices are driven by rumour, world events and normal supply and demand. In a world event like Ukraine others stock pile artificially driving prices up. Similar happens if a bad winter is predicted just not as noticeable.

Heating oil prices have been all over the place in the last few years, any users would benefit from more capacity if they have room and neck the tanks when the prices are sensible.

I think using jet fuel in my boiler may heat the water quicker , but what’s the neighbour going to think when my after burner starts to cremate their fence / dog / cat , car

That is unlikely to work out in that way. Many flights will have to extended to fly around the restricted zones, and the removal of access to a number of airports will mean that some ETOPs flights will also be diverted causing additional distance, stops (landings/takeoffs). Add to this the fact that many more people are returning to flying post lockdowns/restrictions and aviation fuel consumption will be on the up.

Of course I could be wrong, and the rising cost of fuel and the rising cost of living in general, will mean we cant afford to fly......
