Heating, or eating? That's the choice lots of pensioners face, even before these ridiculous price rises to come.Oil off now but for HW. Sitting in the lounge now with a 2kW fan heater on.
I didn't think I'd become one of those old folk, living in one room, quite so soon.
Sorry but WTF!
92p/L tonight for heating oil. I'm at a loss...
Grab it while you can, can’t see things changing for the positive in the near future.Whew! Got a quote of 76p/L![]()
I look at it this way. Whilst ever I can afford the bill, I'll be damned if I'm going to be any of cold, mucky or uncomfortable/limited. Flat needs heating, laundry & I need washing, & then there's workshop time. I'll sacrifice non of those unless I must, (but even then the cleanliness bit would apply regardless).
I shall be calling Flogas on Monday to tell them to top up my bulk propane tank. I'm down to 40%, from the max 85% that will go in. It's taken 10 months to use that much, but I'd rather fill it now than wait until they whack up the prices, like the electric rip off merchants are doing.Grab it while you can, can’t see things changing for the positive in the near future.
Hopefully by next winter times will have changed for the positive.
Me too, my log burner kicks out a hell of a heatWell put, it needs a pragmatic approach. I'm not going to be cold and worry about the price, I will be warm and worry about the bill later
do the insulation in spring not summerI’ve come to the conclusion that no loft insulation in a 100 year old house is not do-able any longer, another project for the summer, also need to gather and chop a load more firewood, hopefully by starting the log burner at 4pm will convince her indoors that at least one warm room will be acceptable and I can turn the thermostat down from 18 to 16 for the remainder rooms, might be able to reduce my gas bills by 25%
It‘s getting a bit silly now, heating bill is now half my mortgage cost, I feel so lucky I can afford it.
Can only imagine what problems this is going to cause families and pensioners next winter if things don’t get back to some degree of normality.
I had the same thought as I use diesel rather than a fan heater to heat my workshop. Glad you did the maths before I had to..One litre of oil contains over 10kWh of energy. Even at 90p/litre oil should be cheaper than leccy - unless you are lucky enough to still be on a fixed tariff?
the trade off between heating one room or the house is wrong unless your bedroom is above the heated roomI had the same thought as I use diesel rather than a fan heater to heat my workshop. Glad you did the maths before I had to..
Maybe the trade off is heating one room rather than whole house, but in that case decent Thermostatic radiator valves could improve that...
That depends... I have to go around the house twice a week resetting the TRVs which have been wound wide open by 'indoors.Maybe the trade off is heating one room rather than whole house, but in that case decent Thermostatic radiator valves could improve that...
I've invested in Hive ones which can be monitored and set via an app. That depends... I have to go around the house twice a week resetting the TRVs which have been wound wide open by 'indoors.

Pretty sure they'll pay for themselves pretty quickly.
