I need to buy a very small amount of 50mm box section.

It is easy to buy a 6mt length 50mm box from the local stockholders. They will cut in half so it fits in the car.


However, all I need is two short bits, each being just 200mm long (8 inch). What shall I do? It doesn't need to be new, so new or used is fine.

I’ve bought a few bits of steel tube off ebay, they seem to have the best selection. Metal supermarket just seem to be incredibly complicated to use online, and want me to ask for quotes etc etc, then they’ll add VAT, and postage, while ebay has it simply laid out.

That is my ideal option above and what I prefer. Happy to collect and pay or swap something of use.

Additional info. I only need mild steel. Rusty pieces are ok. It doesn't really matter too much about wall thickness, but obviously 3mm will last longer in the ground than thinner wall stuff.

I intend hammering a piece in to the lawn-about an inch below the surface so it is ok to mow the grass above it. It is to slot a wooden post in & out-(maybe 45mm x 45mm or whatever the internal size is on 50x50) just for hanging bird feeders from.

Mainly for my older brother who does not have much going on in his life/depression, and rarely gets out of bed. I will probably put the other in my garden.

Pick up a box a Celebrations/Heros, google local engineering/welding/mechanics nearby, call in and ask if they have any off cuts you could have.

I’ve had some luck with scrap metal dealers but with a ‘no climbing‘ rule you‘d have to get lucky to find something like that that’s accessible.

Not disagreeing at all, but i have to say small customers (in the main) are an absolute pain in the neck, and I can totally see why people decide to only work with big ones/charge more for smaller customers/etc etc.

Perhaps our local stockholder works on the principle small customers may be bigger customers in the future
