It’s not 3kwh to boil a kettle though - it’s about 0.25 (ish) - so I think it does (very roughly)translate to 60 ish kettles, at least as much as my Covid addled brain can think at the moment!

Even the proper website doesn't tell a straightforward power story. It's most frustrating.

So the actual story seems to be, 59 MJ in total, over 5 seconds duration, with an average power output of 11 MJ (11MW)

It still takes 800MW to run, so I'm not too excited yet.

11,000 kW / 12 (5 secs) / 60 to get it into kwh and then divide by 0.25 (kwh to boil kettle) gives about 61.1

Of course, we're assuming 11,000 KW was sustained for 5 seconds. You'll probably find it peaked at 11,000 and the average was way lower

I think they were using something doesn't melt, rather than making electric.

Like testing a TDI after fitting. Reving it in the workshop is dreadful mpg, but it tests it. Once the rest is plumbed in and you are on the road, then you save money, compared to the knackered petrol you took out.

Not really a great analogy - this is more akin to discovering that petrol will burn - now they just need to design an engine, then a car, then some roads to drive on… etc - all from scratch.

But better then commenting on how inefficient it is? But the Oxford people were testing one part of the new engine design. Not trying to make free electric.

It's great as a proof of concept, but the article clearly said it couldn't run any longer due to overheating or something. So we are not at the stage where it is commercially viable. Until that happens, it's just a concept.

11mw enough to boil 60 kettles of water? Where did they get that figure.

Say a kettle is 3kwh, 60 is 180kwh.
If it took 3 minutes to boil those kettles that's 9kw of energy.

11mw is 11,000kw.

I can't see the math.

11mW wouldn't boil a kettle, 11mW is 0.011W. Even the most efficient light bulb would be barely visible at that power.
