Late last year phoned Merc garage for a price to change pads all round, I can't remember price, but it wasn't cheap.
Bought pads at factors over river from me, less than £20.00 replaced pads all round in less than 1.5 hours. It was unbelievably simple, didn't even have to bleed system and, I reckon Merc dealer would replace in same manner, top dollar and easy money for them.

Well I'm an agricultural engineer, a mate and myself left a JCB dealership 4 years ago. To start with we were charging £22 per hour, now charge £25 per hour and we are about the most expensive "little guys" around here I know of.
We have a small workshop and 2 transits to keep and we find it hard going to be honest. There are times we make a bit of money but on the whole we survive and thats about it.
If I can charge £35.00 per hour for working on cars mobile I can't help but feel I'm in the wrong job somehow. Before the strike of the recession when we lost several of the customers we had found relating to the building and demolition trades, if I was busy I used a couple of local garages to me for odd little jobs on my car, one charges £28 per hour but no vat and the other charges £20.00 per hour plus vat.
On the flip side of the coin though a few months ago my dear ol dad ran his 2 1/2 year old merc in to the dealer for a service and they charged him £100.00 for 8l of oil and the whole service came to £480.00. Yep that confirmes it, I'm in the wrong job!!!

well i work in a dealership (supposedly) which is factory/manufacturer owned and labour is £38 ph........and still the customers say we`re too dear..and this is on the vehicles that earn them their living,which pays for their bmws,mercs audis etc. i sometimes ask them how much it costs to get those serviced...things then go a little quiet sometimes.

Ah... customers.
I tell customers that moan about my hourly rate, I can work shorter hours at a lower rate if they want.
My favourite is when they bring me a job and say it will only take a few minutes to do without knowing the first thing about what is involved.
My all time favourite though, is when they visit my workshop halfway through their job and start asking if I'm going leave it like that? Or say I've missed a bit.

Ah Porsche, i actually respect them for their engineering approach and besides who remembers the Vauxhall Calibra (cavalier in a bad frock!)

i'm supposed to charge £25 per hour, but being a pleb and knowing my customers personal finances and circumstances means i knock an hour or two off and then i quote what i would think the job would cost and it always takes twice as long
the company that were in my unit before me charged £35 per hour but they only survived 4 months before going tits up
there are garages that can chareg £35 -£38 per hour near me but they are in town and have better facilities and bigger overheads
i specialise in classic car restoration but take on any work to keep the money rolling in
one day... i might even pay myself!

I think my labour charge was about £1 an hour, quite competitive dont you think

Nice to know I'm not alone in the business world. Still, at least I get to play with welders and stuff so it aint all bad!!!!

Friend of mine works for a Porsche main stealer and I get to know first hand want piles of junk they are !! Maybe a controversial opinion , but having owned a 911 myself I know it to be true.
The warranty claims are apparently orbital but Porsche never argue with customers and sometimes never even tell them there has been a repair , their image and reputation is what allows them to charge the obscene prices for the car, it's maintenance , parts , accessories , merchandise etc.
Also , how often is a Porsche seen on the road actually being given any stick !!
Better stop the rant now I think !!

My local independent garage charges me £30/hour. They also lend a car (09 Freelander) if they don't get finished when they say they will. Car went in for a fuel leak recently - took two visits to find the problem, then a third to fix it (had to order parts) - charged me two hours labour and I get a month to pay on account.
They have been in business for over 30 years, so not just cheap as a start-up.
