What was it mainly used for how and why does the chuck change angles?
How old.

Brace and bit.

Old school for boring holes in timber with triangular auger bits etc.

Not that old I remember my Dad having one and using it. Still got one somewhere. Standard chippy kit here until fairly recently.

Proper, handraulic kit that, before all this new fangled lectric stuff.

I have one of these from my late father. The mechanism next to the chuck is a ratchet, the knurled collar should rotate to change the ratchet direction with the centre position locking up. It will take the wood boring bits with a tapered square section at the end of the shank. Hope this helps.

I use mine with a Ridgeway expanding bit, one bit does any size of hole (within its limits). There is also a cunning device with a u-j in it which allows you to drill holes right in a corner.

Absolutely superb for driving in or removing heavy duty screws, bracing against your body reduces ‘camming’ out

Just to add my 10 pence worth, the ratchet is used when in confined spaces such as drilling joists for cables, there is also a special version for joists, I’ll see if I can find a picture.

I use my dads old one as a speed brace when changing Chuck jaws,on a 12” chuck it makes a difference.

These tools have been around for a while...There's one in the Portsmouth museum where artefacts found in the 1510-built ship, the Mary Rose, are displayed!
