My ex neighbour installed a pit for auto mechanics.
He dug the hole, and dropped in a fully welded steel box (probably some time in the 70s when metal was cheaper)
He said it only stayed there a short while until the water lifted it out again like a boat.
He had to pump the water and put spikes through the sides into the ground to keep it down, and it's still there now (he had not moved)
Furze doesn't seem to have an issue with water, although a lot of the missile silos in the states that have gone over the private ownership needed to be drained. And then drained constantly from a sump once they are empty.
Somthing "bunny" on YouTube has a series.

I can't watch the Furze videos without bringing it back to H and S, having just completed a Nebosh exam with quite a bit on excavations might have something to do with that
Water very much depends on the surrounding geology, I have a job coming up with a confirmed Oxford Clay formation at 120m, we have designed the system so we keep all drilling below 110m, if you puncture the Oxford Clay you will get artesian, ladt one I saw was around 60m head (so the water came 120m up the borehole then 60m into the air, takes a bit to control that)

What about something more like an Anderson shelter ? It might be easier to make and dismantle, and be a bit safer if you do build it. It could come in handy the way them russians are shaping up too.
I've got one of those in bits I paid £20 for it. Not a lot of use but they're becoming more scarce as the years roll by
I wouldn't bury an underground tank with the idea of leaving it empty. Most underground tanks rely on being full to stop them collapsing. You have to fill them as you backfill or they crack. And 8f you are lucky enough for them not to crack they float.

I remember when I was just a bit older than your lad, about 10, we had just been posted back to the U.K. from RAF duty in Singapore. Our stuff was being shipped over in several big crates, loads of planks of wood. I had this notion I was going to build myself a small private shed out of them, somewhere to get away from my 3 nosey noisy sisters, and I lay awake at night for weeks planning the construction, eagerly waiting for the cases to turn up.
The day they did arrive, and were opened, I was out in the garden all afternoon sorting the various planks out, straightening nails etc, full of beans.....
.....but by the end of the second day I had lost interest, thoroughly demoralised. The rough old splintered strips of cheap coconut wood were awful, cracked and uneven, nothing like I’d imagined they’d be, not the smooth, square, easily cut soft timber of my imagination. Nothing like I’d seen in my dads DIY magazines.
Day 3 all the planks were lined up for my dad to take to work and dump.
That seemed to be the way most of my expansive plans and projects went for the next couple of decades.
Time, and experience, taught me a lot, and I have actually finished one or two projects over recent years.

I did! The kids have one each planted on the day they were born (wife panting away and swearing at me for some reason). They’re about 30 years off being mature enough for a treehouse I’d need to have planted them when I was 6.Erm...hopefully you got the analogy of doing things with your kids when young but that it's never too late!

Definitely! I am also obsessed with underground stuff. Always have been. Used to do quite a bit of caving. I have also explored old mineral mines and a few working ones such as the salt mines in Cheshire and the Boulby mine. Love them all.
I would love a bunker like that but sadly I would never have the time.
I did once almost buy a property in the States that had an abandoned gold mine

Colin lives about a quarter mile from me. I (jokingly) refer to him as the ‘lunatic’, but he makes a good living doing what he does.
No water table problem as we are virtually on the top of the hill (sort of plateau) well above the river that runs through the town. He was lucky in that his house was on the edge of a new-to-be building site and, of course, all the costs were picked up/sponsored by Sky TV and/or such-like.
He occasionally brings some of his stuff along to the local model eng. soc. meetings. The last thing I rode was his “spring“ bike, back before covid stopped everything.
One day, I will ask for a tour of his bunker.

No disagreement on how clever he is, but the water table, location and artesian water are not related, you could be on top of a mountain and hit artesian

Our house where we lived as kids was in a 7 acre disused sand pit, mostly just quite soft sandstone left by then.
It was a paradise for kids as we could dig tunnels and underground dens in the banks, and even bigger ones in pits, roofed over with planks and turf.
Some got quite cosy with fireplaces and chimneys, as the sandstone dried out it became very crumbly. We built the behind shrubs and brambles to hide them. Parents never even seemed to notice what we were doing, how we survived is still a mystery to me!
