They need to be signed off sick by a Doctor and then claim for ESA..They can receive ESA and also be applying/waiting for PIP..

I'm assuming they aren't working.

mixed up between making a new claim for jobseekers allowance and universal credit

where one claim has to be stoped to make another claim for the other pip claim

you can transfer between them but as rget are a new claimant its going to be hard until there first claim starts

the person wont get ESA, its a contributory benefit now, will only pay based on national insurance contributions though paid employment in 2 of the last 3 tax years, as the person is 18, its unlikely that they've been working enough (if at all) and the claim will be closed. the means tested version of ESA has been replaced by Universal Credit.

no you can have a Dual Claim for New Style (contribution based) jobseekers allowance and Universal Credit, where the money paid by JSA will be deducted from UC, if its old style JSA (income based) your claim for Jobseekers Allowance would be closed after you've made a claim for Universal Credit as you cant have two means tested benefits in payment.

Wales has free prescriptions - great selling point. The fact the NHS in Wales is so awful doesn't seem to matter
I thought people in England with serious illness etc also had free prescriptions ? I then checked the list. I can see it could be very easy to fall through the gaps!

My daughter works for Spec Savers and lives in Chester but works a few miles away in Wales. She says the records for the NHS is done on line in England but still done manually on paper for Wales !

If lad gets a receipt for every prescription he pays for then if PIP granted they will refund back to the application date

They are not living with family they are being given free accommodation by a person who has space and helps rehome locals, the place they were given after coming out of care was a hostel which was privately run and since closed leaving them homeless

Try the NHS medical expenses helpline 0300 330 1343. Not sure if he qualifies for medical exemption but there are also annual prescription charges that work out cheaper if lots of prescriptions are required

Reminds me of my dad that was in a Burnardos home until he turned 16 when they gave him a Bible and said fairwell!
That was in the 50's though.

This is another one of those things i was asked about today, I know of an 18 year old who is in kidney failure and is trying to claim PIP but it is going very slow, while they are waiting they have severe money issues and cannot get prescriptions free as they do not qualify as you need to be a student or on certain benefits, I have looked at the NHS Low Income Scheme but it seems they do not qualify, am i missing something or is a person in this position just stuck?

Pre paid prescription card is £9-£10 a month I think. Why not just do that?

call ESA and ask them, if its new style ESA, you cant claim the income based element of ESA, thats been replaced by Universal Credit. The government havn't updated the letters that they send out.

Really ? Maybe in theory. Trans folk I know are on decade long waiting lists and resort to gofundme. And have to self fund prescriptions, same as everyone in England.

How many month's supply does his doctor give him? Mine only gives one month's, some in different Health Authorities give two or three. Often worth a word in the doctor's ear.
If you are going to buy a pre-payment certificate, buy it on the day he gets his prescription. Do it online in the pharmacy with a debit card, it is then valid immediately.
Play the system, get one lot in on the last day of the certificate. Don't renew until the day you get the next lot dispensed. This assumes he doesn't have any drugs or dressings in the interim.

The history of charges and exemptions is unusual. It started as 6d per prescription form. Doctors would then write the whole family's medication on one form, using the reverse if necessary. The NHS cottoned on to that, made it 6d per item. I think there was period when prescriptions became free, but that didn't last long. The fee has nothing to do with the cost of the item, it could cost 20p or £2000, still only one charge. The pharmacist is an unpaid tax collector.
The exemptions were a last minute balls up. Retirement age, 60 for women and 65 for men, those at school. Then one MP piped up about diabetes, then another about thyroid problems. This is how myasthenia gravis ended up on the list.
The retirement age inequality took one individual several years of protesting to get changed, by then, he was 65 anyway.
Cancer has been a recent addition to the list.

Whether all prescriptions should be free to all or everyone should pay a nominal fee, say £1 per item is a discussion for another day and another place.
