Winter draws on (or rather wet warm weather in West Wales does)

As title, warm and wet over here the last few days, time to switch on the dehumidifier. 2 litres a night I’ve emptied out so far. Anyone who says they don’t work should see what happens when it’s accidentally left off.
So @pressbrake1 , get your shed sealed up best you can and get one on the wall, before that planer starts to rust..

My trusty ebac is getting emptied twice a week. Ive got it on a digital timer, half an hour on an hour off, as the humistat doesnt work in the garage

I think the ebac is the same as the Hotpoint one I have, must be 20 yrs old now. The only issue I’ve had was the fan motor bushes drying up and seizing. A strip, clean and relube has fixed it twice.
It will be on continuously until feb or March, unless the door is open, or we have a long cold and dry spell (seldom happens here).

Yesterday I went up to the garage and my but puckered when I saw rust over the mill, filer, and drill press tables for the first time here. Never had the problem before, so I guess it's welcome back home to the UK. My neighbour has a strip of rubber based carpet attached to the lintel across his garage door opening, which is draped back over the roll up door to keep out most of the draft. It doesn't seem to have a negative affect on the operation of the door, so I think its time for me to do the same.

Get a few vivarium heated cables plugged in and draped round the machines, they'll keep them dry & free of surface rust. Something along these lines [other suppliers are available] CLICKY

Cheap to run too, and won't set fire to anything.

Do you think that would work on 1500kg of cast iron?
Worth a try.
For long term storage I find wire rope spray lube is brilliant. Protected my lathe for 18 years indoors until I got around to using it
Bit messy for normal use though.

Would depend on the shape & size, I suppose . As you say, worth a try for all they cost.

Yes, welcome to Wales, everything inside is damp, everything outside is green...
Sealing against the moist draughts is a must....

i normaly use wd 40 0n all gear but just invested in some acf 50 which is much better and long lasting . its 25 quid a pop mind but you get a fair size bottle and spraygun

Underfloor heating cable might be worth a look as well.

Thanks John. Think I will have to have a chat with my Niece, as she has a large Iguana type lizard in a big fish tank, with I believe is heated with a similar or the same heating arrangement.

Wd40 is a waste of time at rest preventing. Duck oil is better, but sometimes you just need something thicker, like the stuff @fizzy uses.

but would you want to use the machine after you clagged it up with gunk and had to wipe it off before every use . ok for long time storage covered up mind

I don't use it on the machines, don't tend to be too bothered with rust even though I am just a few metres from the sea, sometimes closer

I have it for the bike, just have the trigger one but plan on getting one of the refillable air cannisters to use it with.

No I just use light oil to wipe down after use. The wire rope spray is long term. Marvellous stuff. Think it was rocol. It's black I know that much.
Easily removed with wd40 though.

Is yours a compressor or dessicant type?
I find compressors are best in warm humid weather but dessicants carry on working even at 4C or less.

I have a roll up doubledoor on the garage and when the wind blows it pushes the door enough to whistle letting in the cold, my fix was to make some wooden wedges that slide behind the roller keeping the door sealed against the weatherstripping.
