My last lathe I promise - fingers crossed

I have been after a quality toolroom lathe for ages.
I love my Triumph and it is incredibly accurate - just fancy driving an Aston Martin instead of a Jag

Anyway I have always hankered after one of the top toolroom lathes

And I managed to find a CVA at a reasonable price!
Hopefully it will be as good as the seller claims. Collecting it a week Sunday. All 1500kg of it!
Comes with all the accessories which is very unusual and it makes a a bargain.

For people not familiar with these it is very closely based on the famous Monarch 10EE.

That black rectangular plate on the front left base casting is the metric threading chart, so the lathe should have a set of gears to go with it for cutting metric threads. If It does, those gears alone are worth a good £500 coz they fit the Monarch square dial machine too and are in great demand.

I am still out in Portugal - travelling back tomorrow.
Seller sounds pretty decent. We shall see - only paid 50% so far.
As I said the accessories are worth as much as the lathe.

They use a Sundstrand hydraulic gearbox, yes in the base casting. The spindle is belt driven from that gearbox to isolate the spindle from the powertrain for quality of finish purposes.

These lathes are quite simply a step above from the usual machine. For instance they have an oil pump inside the apron that pumps lubricating oil to the saddle and cross-slide ways, constantly oiling them when you move the saddle. All you have to do is keep the apron reservoir topped up. The screwcutting gearbox is entirely separate from the apron auto feeds and is completely disconnected when not screwcutting, to reduce wear on the gears and again avoid 'noise' from affecting fine finishes. The cross slide dial has a built-in 2-turn stop that allows you to screwcut very efficiently. You set the stop and advance the tool by the compound. When you come to the end of a threading pass you quickly wind out the tool then as you're preparing for the next pass add in your extra depth of cutting on the compound and then wind the cross slide back in to the stop. Instant repeatable setting every time.

Pete answered it best but also sheer weight for rigidity.
The CVA is the same size as a Colchester Student but 3x the weight.
Even heavier than my Colchester Triumph which is a far bigger machine.
