Cat proofing a garden: Keeping them in.

My sister's just bought a brace of puddycats. Furry little cute things, apparently they are called 'Ragdoll' cats, and are renowned for being soft, affectionate, and a bit stupid. ie no road sense. So, she wants to keep them inside her house and garden and not let them wander too far. She's found some security type stuff, but very spendy. These are £25 apiece, plus netting. www. protectapet. com

So we (she) are thinking of making the bars ourselves, and I thought of using 25 x 6mm ally strip. There wont be any weight on it, apart from maybe a stranded thicko cat with its claws caught, so does the mig welding collective think the ally flat bar would be strong enough?

Or any suggestions for a different method, such as heavy steel neck collar etc?

your going to find it hard to keep them in it will depend on what your gardens like you be suprised at how far they can jump and clime

They look like a better idea, I'll pass it by my sister.

I'll also mention other incoming cats might cause a right drama if they cant get back out.

Roofing strap is the way to go like the stuff DeeJ shows. You can get it without the bend and put your own in it. Cut your own out of 5x30 steel strip and drill it to fix would be my method.

I like ally bar depending on look 50x5mm...at least it wont rust.....
as for the grid the picture is perfect but u really need on the inner edge an up stand say 30cm tall to discourage visitors from the outside.....
If u keep em entertained that breed will stay close to home.....
I cut down a small Oak tree for ours..it was hard to get em out of it ecept at feeding times ......that was our Burmese Leopard cat before a dog ripped her to bits......
or u could go nuts....

our next house will get the high walks.....thats if I can get my Siamese outta the office chair.....hahaha...

Needs to be fully enclosed. No chance the first image would stop a cat

Good luck on that front. That first photo would just be a challenge to them, not a deterrent.

It's what I did when we moved in here. All home built from wood and chicken wire. The important thing is a "reverse" lip, which discourages them from trying to get over it. They don't like climbing upside down.

That sounds like the cat flap in the door operated by a magnet on the cat's collar, sat outside waiting to see it in operation and nothing was happening, went back in and the cat was stuck to the fridge (not a true story)

I think it's sensible to keep them in, I wouldn't like to think my £500 cat was roaming about at the risk of foxes and badgers or traffic and petnappers.

Start at the bottom of the fences and work up. A cat doesn’t need a huge hole to get out of some where. If the fence is sound make the fold over bit with 3ft rabbit netting. Make any gates self closing

The self closing gate is probably the most important bit. Any parcel guy is likely to hold the gate open to let the cat out!

Suck it and see. Those "ragdoll" cats are complete simpletons in my experience. Probably couldn't make their way out of a paper bag. A standard fence might be ample enough to flummox them.
