MAPP gas torches

Ever since giving up my Oxy Acetylene gear many moons ago in favour of Mig welding (mainly on safety grounds) I miss the ability to do perform the odd brazing/silver soldering job + the convenience of being able to free components frozen by rust. Additionally, I have used the aluminium alloy (soldering?) rods to good effect on some broken alloy castings but always felt the need for a bit more heat than a standard plumbers propane torch could supply.
Would a MAPP gas torch fulfil/perform any of the above tasks?

I have successfully silver soldered, aluminium soldered, and once, I think, brazed. The larger the part the more difficult it is to get heat into it, so that is the limiting factor. You could go oxy/fuel. No good for welding but fine for everything else.

That looks interesting, how long do the canisters last & cost?

They are not cheap off ebay etc £50 gets you a can/bottle of each, possibly cheaper at plumbers merchants - never tried mind.
For small alu and other soldering / brazing / heating jobs etc they have lasted me a fair while

Oxy Gas, be it propane, butane, MAPP gas, methane, or hydrogen, with the correct hoses, regulators, torch and nozzles, will allow hotter flames than gas-air mixtures alone, and normally easily hot enough for brazing.

Back in the 80s I had one of the Welding centre ( Glasgow) Oxy /MAPP set ups and used it to weld the various morris minors I ran then. This worked well for a good few years and yes there is theoretical issues with hydrogen embrittlement.
Then the MAPP production plant in the states stopped producing and the replacement MAPP wasn't as hot

It is still good for Brazing and Silver soldering

Oxy propane is the way forward. It’s a big step up from mapp gas and not To much more in cost than the eBay link.

I don’t use it that often but it’s a good when you have to

This little kit was very good, you could braze with it.
I even heated to cherry red a sledge head, used a lot of gas, but it did it.

Shop around for gas is the best I can say.

Totally disagree , if I was in that far I would go with acetylene , the saving on propane vanishes with the extra cost and hassles of needing far more oxy , it never seems to warm things as nicely , and I find its totally different to cut with ,, so much so that the farm I work on has gone back yo paying boc rent just to get acet back . And of course you can weld with it too , I know some folk like it , and most scrap yards and steel merchants use oxy prop but for me , its back to acet.

TBF the OP knows acetylene and is not looking to need that heat intensity, Parms comparison was with mapp gas

I am not sure if smaller versions of this torch are available, its an OXY/Propane torch that fits on a saffire 3 but its equally happy running on Propane and compressed air. Its one up on a normal propane torch in terms of heat and will get thick lumps of plate cherry red quite quickly.

Im just as happy with acet as propane in the garage , and since its available rent free I cant see why oxy prop is any different from oxy acet . My point was if any one was going to the bother of running oxy/ anything , id not settle for propane.
Map has its place , but thats usually in a plumbers van .

I never gave it any thought and bought Oxy/acetylene for my home shop for those times when you need alot of heat besides I still have to try this spray welder.

For cutting though I have a Hypertherm 1100 that’s we’ve cut 1” with so we have most of the bases covered.

just buy adams gas oxyacet bottles rent free . will last donkeys and not to large

I have a hobby weld oxyacetylene kit which I brought over from uk however I emptied the acetylene bottle and it’s a mission to get it refilled due to different style taps however I use a LPG bottle with quality regulator and I had my machinist do some tips for oxy acetylene brazing. With decent oxygen I can do heating, cutting and even welding/brazing… it’s portable round the garage too being small bottles and on a cart !
I also have a 5kg gas bottle with a plumbers torch I use for burning regular bushes or freeing up bolts, I have a transfer bottle adapter which I use from the larger bottles into the smaller bottles…
