Sinking a basement

It may be a brain fart but with space being at a premium, it would be nice to have my machine shop downstairs.
Has anyone got any ideas on sinking a shaft on an existing workshop ?
I'm thinking build a ring beam and build on it like the old timers used to do then under mine it and repeat .
Any other suggestions would be welcome.

I do have clay pretty mutch immediately and the water table is almost straight away ,but its firm clay with rocks etc and I've got some big pumps 2,3,4and 6 inch if needed.

dont be fooled by using a pump . i dug a pit in my garage in to solid clay the jcb driver said get it shuttered up quick and get it concreted i said im doing it in 2 days time it ****** down the next day and water was seeping through the layers of clay . i put a pump in and went to work . came home 4 hours later and all the sides had caved in and full of water

Clear out the workshop
Remove the floor
Install sheet piles as close to the existing foundation as you can
Prop the top of the sheet piles - (assume the piles will drive far enough that the toe will be secure)
Excavate down
If necessary install a second level of props
Dig to formation level
Install tanking and / or drainage etc
Install floor
Install access
Remove intermediate props
Install roof / workshop floor (assume thick heavily reinforced concrete because it will need to span wall to wall or install intermediate supports (columns)
Remove top props
Tank walls and floor


Don’t forget to leave an access big enough to get all your machine tools down there.

I'm not sure that ground water will be a problem?, My building inspector made me dig 2 meters deep due to tree roots that were none existent and I had to mass fill the trench with concrete due to seams of coal showing?
And with 3 layers of B 503 mesh ,I think he thought I was building a multi story car park

Once you've dug it, how do you get the machines down there?

I do like the idea of a subterranean workshop, you could spend all night down there without annoying the neighbours. Great place for your meth lab too.

The coal was so shiny, a blow torch couldn't have ignited it

I won't get it wrong, I'll do my research and make decisions from there.

Sorry to be a party pooper, but a below ground workshop will always be damp. If not from ingress (yes it will!) but from condensation.
