How to protect tools after rust removal

I have spent the morning with citric acit and, vinegar removing the rust from a load of tools, taps, spanners, dies, punches ect ect.
No what is the best way to treat them to stop them rusting again?

Boil them in oil or just a squirt of WD40 or similar?

Good coating of WD40 and if they are not in regular use put them in a plastic bag with an extra squirt of WD.

I've some old tools I cleaned probably 15 years ago. I (engine or gearbox) oiled them and then put in ziplock bag. They are still rust free today

I used wd etc but also have silica gel in each tool box drawer.

I don't find WD much good for keeping rust at bay at all.

If you're proper keen osmo polyx seems to work wonders on metal too, but, if not, some other sort of wax finish.

WD just seems too thin and it vanishes to nothing.

My experience is from cast tools in regular use but in damp environments.

Lube of any sort and clingfilm, lasts forever.

Mix bee's wax, linseed oil and some white spirit.
Over a low heat.
Melt the wax, then add the oil.
Remove from heat and add the spirit.
Allow to cool, apply to a warm tool and buff well.
2 or 3 coats may be needed.

Liberon lubricating wax. Designed for cast iron saw tables and the like, but I use it on all sorts of bare metal bits in the workshop. Guess any wax polish would do much the same.

if u have a compressor knock up a small cabinet and beadblast them after de rusting. it makes a lovely smooth peened finish then coat with duck oil it works a treat
