HDMI issues.

I have my grandson's PC with me to fix. Just stopped working.
So I also have my laptop and a Dell 24 inch monitor.
The laptop works on the Dell monitor. So windows 10 is working with additional screens.

But ...this is where it gets strange.
I have 3 HDMI cables with me and neither the monitor or the 32 inch TV we have works with any HDMI cable
So I grabbed a Bush TV with HDMI port in it for a tenner.

THAT also does not work on laptop. Needless to say grandsons PC does not work on any of the 3 but does not have a VGA port to test with .

I can't believe all 3 cables and also all 3 screens have broken HDMI ports......but starting to get stumped now.

(Update I purchased yet another cable today. From a more reputable store) stil lno joy.. it's baffling me now.

I'm a little confused about what you're saying.

So we know the laptop and monitor work. But the PC is not talking to any screen? If that's the case then all you've proven is that the PC is actually busticated, nothing to do with the displays.

Does it give a power-on beep? Try disconnecting the drives and see if it at least tries to start.
If it has two memory sticks, trying running with one (swapping them round obviously).

Next, try a different graphics card if you can get your hands on one.

If none of that makes a difference then I'd suspect the motherboard is goosed.

2 tests i run with screens and wires

if screen one dosnt work then i try with another wire first

then i try with another screen

if neither work then its down to your gcard

also to note wrong settings on your gcard can also cause no screen boot

try booting pc with no memory in it, it should beep an error code

Silence means motherboard or Psu dead

Could be a setting in the monitor, like anamorphic, 14x9, 16x9 etc. It would have to exactly match the output from the PC. Try plugging it into the telly and changing the settings. Also, some PCs won't send a signal to a compatible display unless it is connected prior to boot. You may be in a situation where an incompatible setting does not allow the PC to boot in dual/remote screen mode. Don't windows crashes sometimes come up in fuzzy old 4x3 at some stupidly low res?

Data is more important, rescue/clone the disk before you do anything else.

<edit> if it was a Mac, I'd boot from the errant machine in target disk mode but via a good machine (with display) then check/reset screen settings on the bad machines hard drive. Can PC's do that?

Is it giving you the bios screen when you start up ? Press DEL to enter set up or similar so you can check your settings. Does the motherboard have onboard graphics or a separate card, is it giving you a single beep for the POST ? More than one beep you have a problem.

I am not. At this moment in time trying to trouble shoot the PC.
I have a laptop that works.

It displays an external display on a Dell monitor. USING A VGA CABLE.

Using as of tonight 4 different HDMI cables I cannot get a display on the monitor or two TV'S. (From the laptop that works with a VGA cable)

The PC does NOT have VGA port so I need to establish a working HDMI cable before I start.

I am in a van
So trying to work with what I have to hand.

I find it hard to think that all 4 HDMI cables are goosed.
Or that the monitor and Two TV's have goosed HDMI ports. Especially when the TV's work with both a Chromecast and a Firestick.
Not sure what else to try.

unless you have tested the pc first on a known working hdmi screen tried the cables and found them to be working

your so far blaming the tvs or the cables but as you have bought an expensive one probably gold plated and braided then that should work

So your laptop is the one that does not hook up via HDMI. You may need to boot it connected and with the lid shut. You may even need to reboot is while connected to a monitor which is confirmed set to standard HDMI resolution 1920x1080. It is possible your laptop does not support dual monitors at 1080.

lol I am not baming anything yet. Just trying to get some advice and trying to be clear what I have and why.

If I was at home I would not need to do these things as I have known working monitors and HDMI cables.

I cant confirm either of the two TV,s have ever worked with my laptop. (HDMI) or if the monitor has.. In fact I know it hasnt.

I do know my latop (before it was updated to windows 10 has connecting to many many projectors and monitors over the years.

I am sort of aware VGA and HDMI are different signals BUT not in a technical way to know if HDMI should work if VGA does.
I SUSPECT windows 10 as its the most likely IMHO but I cant even find out what graphics card is fitted in the laptop it keeps telling me all sorts like intel HD and AMD radeon etc etc. Seems like my laptop is not expensive enough for Microsoft to bother with drivers for it. But speccy does not give me enough detail.

I might be wrong and its more a case of learning and being stubborn now. I have another TV in the 5thwheel (which we no longer use I will be fetching it as its closer than my house) that I KNOW has worked with HDMI when it was on Windows 7 previously. Mainly because its bugging me now.

Edit.. Not a gold plated or braided one but one not years old or from the pound shop. lol

I have never had problems with pound shop HDMI cables but I need to rule everything out! Its annoying me now. I can easily leave checking my grandsons PC till I get home or indded fit the spare graphics card I have with me to his PC and see if it works on this Dell monitor. BUT as I say I felt the best way was to establish a working cable first.

Check the monitor and TV are set to show the HDMI input. On our monitors you have to select the input from the default SVGA. The Bush TV probably defaults to which ever signal it receives.

And don’t forget to scroll through the source selections on the laptop, it’ll be the fn key and one of the f keys pressed together.

In the last week we have seen a number of laptops in one of the organisations that I support and my lap top loose the ability to see an active monitor on the HDMI port, we are putting it down to a recent win 10 roll out. In devise manager it showed the intel3000 drivers not migrating during the re start. With the laptop connected to the internet I un installed the intel driver which forced a re start in the nail bitingly long re start the old drivers were found and correctly installed, all machines are now good.
The clue was that there was no momentary blank screen and or beep when the HDMI cable was attached appearing for all the world that the HDMI port connection was broken internally.
FWIW I have seen very few broken HDMI ports, the connector on the cable usually brakes first unlike the older VGA package where the connector was stronger than the port's connections with the mother board / graphics card, usually caused by people forgetting the VGA cable was attached and trying to walk away with their lap top. VGA also suffered from broken or bent pins in the male connector when ham fisted users incorrectly fitted the cables, these could sometimes be straightened as a temporary fix.

Hdmi from a laptop is finicky at the best of times.
Right click the desktop and find the settings.
Try mirroring the desktop on a second display rather than extending the desktop.
Hdmi should support unpnp but whenever I have done presentations or anything involving multiple displays I have found the most reliable way is to connect everything when it's all turned off and then power on the computer.
As mentioned, not all displays automatically switch inputs so make sure the correct hdmi input is selected.
If you only get a black screen try dragging a desktop icon around as it might actually be working fine and just not have anything to display.

Yep. The monitor has 3 options. Setting it to HDMI it says no signal on screen.

note cheap hdmi leads dont always go deep enough to connect ive had the same problem myself

ive also found the same with dvi to hdmi cable as well so be very aware of this

this could be the problem between your laptop and the tv

i prefer gold plated as its just better and so is the connection to each

now on the tvs the power to the hdmi can fail on them another fault as its reciever carries the signal before it decodes to your tv

unless you have a guaranteed screen that you know works its hard to play whats at fault ive been there and cursed it something shocking
alternative faults screen size on screen thats back to safe mode to drop it down to a suitable screen size certain screens do not like full width settings and you need to find there right setting
same with your laptop screen sizer what might work with the at home screen wont work on all tvs

I am not seeing any option to mirror or extend. But as I said below even on the big TV it's saying no signal when I choose the HDMI port. There is 3 to choose from I have tried them all.

If the HDMI on the TV fails would that port still work with fire stick.
