I have a number of friends in the motor trade. When looking for a new (used) conveyance I put the word out, couple of days later there is a selection to choose from. Works for me. My criteria are simple: reliable, cheap to run, less than £1500. I then run it a couple years and sell it for about what I paid, I am not really fussed what it is.
I feel all this is going to come to an abrupt stop though with the advent of bloody electric. I am going to have to find something that will run for a good few years and buy that and be done.

As an aside, I have a friend who, in Feb last year was thinking of getting a new VW Van, he went to the main dealers and they offered him £9.5k PX, he went away to think about it. End of March they called him up and offered him £12.5k right there and then, here we are a little while later and someone has offered him £18k for it. He has ordered a new one and delivery date is next July. He figures if he doesn't want it he will be able to make a quick profit on it anyway.

Cheers for that link, my 08 plate subaru hasn't been used for about a year so I'd been planning to get rid of it, it's not bad mechanically but does need a couple of bits to get through an mot, bodywork and wheels are getting scruffy as well, ones similar on ebay with an mot are going for £900-1000, that website offered £525 so I'm tempted to just get rid with no hassle.

Having bought a used 4x4 a few months back I can honestly say the worst to deal with were the Land Rovers, if you own one dont take that that the wrong way but all the people I dealt with were dreamers/liars/blind in no particular order when it came the description of the vehicle!

Hate buying and selling cars. Normally buy 3 ish year old cars from a dealer then drive them for a long time having had the benefit of main dealer warranty to give assurance that any problems will be sorted. Not the cheapest way to buy cars but gives peace of mind and I haven't had my fingers burnt yet. Can't be doing with the tyre kicking thing. The problem at the £1500 - 2000 mark is that people are generally selling to get rid when problems arise and try to palm them off to an unsuspecting buyer, hiding said faults. My sister in law runs total **** boxes, she asked me to come and look at cars with her but I declined, knowing rightly anything she looks at could explode 5 minutes after buying. She's currently running a Nissan almera tino that cost £500 about 2 years ago how it gets through an mot is beyond me (actually in pandemic world we are having mot exemption here in Northern Ireland currently so that explains it)

Todays generation are different to ours. I grew before the internet age and we had to figure things out and learn by ourselves, a lot of the thing I learnt was by doing things I shouldn't have (had a lot of fun though ). With the advancement of modern technology moving DIY out of a lot of people scope and modern H&S one sad fact is it is impossible to impart all of my gained knowledge on to my kids but will happily help guide them and share whatever experience wherever I can.

My eldest daughter is 30 and is fed up with her husband who cannot do any DIY. She asked me for any tools I had spare to build her own collection. I duly supplied her with some and a nice set from Halfords of general stuff too. She has got straight into it and is happy as anything She looks stuff up and asks if she doesn't understand

Yep, otherwise they wouldn't have bought the car from me anyway. In the unlikely event that I ever sell another daily driver privately, I'll make sure to keep my eyes on what the buyers are up to all the time.

I’ve seen a few reports of scams like this. The other one is pull off a sensor wire so it runs rough. Pikeys have been doing it for years

Depends on circumstances but it would be more tempting to say ‘I can’t sell it to you with something wrong. Sorry to waste your time. Off you pop’ but they come in numbers is the issue.

I’ve said before but as a seller I got ripped off by some Romanians. They bought a truck with nothing wrong with it. Then I heard via eBay they had opened a case as it broke down and they had supplied invoices it took to get it fixed and recovered. Totally false. Then eBay / pay pay which were the same at the time refunded their claim. Which was about £1500 if I recall.

I learnt 2 things. Don’t accept PayPal for vehicles. It’s not as secure as they will tell you. Also, a buy it now price falls under the distance selling regs no matter if it’s a private sale or not. Auctions however do not.

i dont see a problem in this there his kids id want to help my kids as much as i can (and in the hope they learn and watching what im doing so when im not around to help them they know what they need to)

I'm more of a make your own way in life - ask for advice is okay, but do it yourself, make your own mistakes, ask about others mistakes, and learn from them. Not just let everything be done for you.

Being a helicopter parent for ever is why the place is going downhill fast. Not seen one kid of any age who learns from watching - other than how to watch. You can do it, because you did it.

There are good vehicle sourcing companies out there, I used one when I bough the Skoda. Give them your requirements, budget and leave them to it. They come back with a few candidates which they have history checked first. I was very pleased they managed to find me a Super estate which wasn’t black and hadn’t previously been a taxi.
They do also seem to know which particular traders and garages to avoid as well. That alone is worth having just to avoid the knuckle draggers.
Buying privately though, unless you are sure of what you’re looking at, or know the seller well, caveat emptor as they say. Not a risk I like taking even though I’m good with cars.

I too have gone right off buying used cars. I went with a friend and her daughter to look at an Alfa and managed to get £150 off by association as we both know the Mot tester quite well. Then we started talking schools like you do and we were in the same class at big school 40 years ago. Nothing off for that! Annoyingly, this Alfa would have been almost perfect had they applied a little attention to detail in the cleaning and presentation department.

I had to laugh at a guy we bought an Astra off, he said one of the reasons he bought this particular car after looking at loads was that the number plates and tax disc holder advertising matched, always a good sign the car hasn't been in an accident you know.
I then pointed out the different age of the headlamps and slight mismatch in the bumper, bonnet and wing finish compared to the rest of the car and suggested the plates and tax disc holder were fitted by the company who repaired and sold the car.

I have this coming up myself shortly, not looking forward to it.

Need a towing capacity of at least 2.5 tons, for a horsebox. It will also be Mrs RnB's daily drive and she does 12K miles a year, so much as I'd like it that rules out anything with a V8.

I always research potential used car purchases, at places like the good&bad section in Parkers, Autocar and/or Honest John -

Trouble is, it don't-half put you off a lot of cars... ...& explains why I don't buy a car very often....

Also I cross-check the actual car history in the MOT record, e.g. to see what road tax it is, and see if they had the same advisory more than once, shows that owner didn't care for the car enough to have a problem fixed, so what else might they have skimped on?

Some manufacturers really and truly could not give a t*ss about their cars surviving past the 6th year, as problems after that pass onto the dealer and good luck with that... Their Accountants are probably to thank for this, demanding lowest prices from suppliers...

Other manufacturers have built-in "features" which require you to have key components replaced every 4 years or it will self destruct....
~ like certain nameless companies for their cam-belt and waterpump timebombs, and
~ and other nameless companies for their plastic engine components and Vanos and worn-out camchain timebombs.

And thanks "environmentalists" for getting us all stitched up with EGRs, DPFs, Catalytic Converters, Ethanol Fuel, and for the end of IC-engined cars and the start of Battery-Powered Cars which the UK powergrid can't support, forcing the purchase of power from abroad at greatly hiked-up prices no doubt to come.

You might get a mitsibushi shogun sport for that type of money, tow 3 ton. Or if your happy with the road tax a shogun the short wheel base o e tow and drive very well

My daughter is very independant, has never asked me for anything other than advice, but never asked for money, though she doesnt have much. Though I did help her buy her first car. Now shes trying to buy a house. She asked me to come and do a second viewing with her. It was awful and needed lots doing. This morning my Mrs sent her a link to a much nicer one in a nicer area, I sent her the difference to buy it. I dont need it and she would only get it later anyway when Im in a box.
My son on the other hand, is hopless at both diy, buying cars, paying his bills, or paying me back many loans. So he now knows not to ask.

I'll thank the people who thnk my daughter is somehow incapable to keep their opinions to themselves. She's buying a house and all her money is tied up in that so I am helping her with a car.
