Caravans aren't the problem, it's the handful of idiot owners that are. Towing a ton and a quarter of caravan behind a 1.6 Astra! We've all seen them.

I had a caravan for about 10 years while the kids were small and towed it (with a 3.5 litre, fuel injected Rover Vitesse!) many thousands of miles all over the UK and never experienced a problem. On the very, very rare occasions where I could be considered to be holding up traffic, I'd simply get out of the way and allow it to pass. Though, TBH, I can't ever remember the need! It was more often the other way round

I did once have a blow out on it though, at around 60 hauling a55 up hill between Melksham and Calne, and the only indication I had was a slight rumbling noise coming from somewhere behind me. I pulled over into a layby, changed the wheel and carried on.

Like I said, it's not the caravan it's the driver!

Off topic but years ago we had a little caravan and I was towing it behind the 1.6 Escort coming back from Hornsea along a lot of country roads and I was behind a couple of old biddies in a Triumph who never went above 30 mph for about 8 miles. There was a line of traffic behind me and they were getting impatient thinking it was me holding them up so I pulled into a side lane to let them go. They all sailed past accelerating and giving me the finger and dirty looks till they caught up with the Triumph. Within a mile I had caught up with the back of the convoy and we had to follow them for a good few miles till we got on a bit of dual carriageway.

You would be amazed how many idiots pull out to get in front of "the caravan" causing me to brake hard and then carry on behind him....slower than previously..........and they probably say "Id burn all the caravans".
