Post Box

I'm after making a post box to go on the back of my sliding gate or maybe close boarded fence panel. I've managed to score half a dozen stainless steel bins from a commercial toilet refit.

460x230 in plan and 590 high. Appear to be 1 - 1.25mm thick. Folded and TIG'd here and there.

Early musings this but I'd like to have a large'ish slot for big envelopes in the front of the gate but some mechanism whereby the scrotes can't then lean in and grab the post. Backwards facing teeth?

Any suggestions?

Tricky. The only comparison I can think of is the clothes recycling bins (do people steal recycled clothes?) that is effectively a big triangle type box that pivots. Pull out, deposit item, push back, item falls into container.

But it might drastically reduce the largest parcel you're going to get in the box.

This isn't exactly the design I was thinking of but you'll get the idea:

Some years ago I made a custom postbox out of a tugs ship winch control box, it's still outside the (other house, long story), my best advice is go buy a normal £20 post box and butcher it.

That’s the idea I had but you lose a decent amount with the “roller box” in side. Can’t think of another way round it.

Two 'lids' joined by a chain or stainless steel braided wire.

First lid is a normal external lid with a folded flange all around to keep the rain out.

Second 'lid' is internal joined to the first with the chain. This sits under an internal flange and is in the lowered position when the first is closed and horizontal when it is lifted through 90 degrees.

Postie or courier lifts first lid places post on top of second internal lid and closes the first top lid - post drops into space below.

Lockable access door at the rear for you to remove your post.

Edit:

The two lids could be joined together at right angles at the hinge edge to achieve the same effect without the chain.

Made something similar for the gates, stainless box mounted on the back of the gate and big letter flappy gadget on the front, you can’t get your mits into the front to get the mail.

I made this one a few years back, For a relative that owns a fire prevention etc business, It you made the post slot rain deflector a little longer.the scrotes could not get their arm to go round the bend, The main box all made from one sheet of 3mm plate, Cut half way through with a thin disc on the bends,, Folded and all rewelded

when I was coming out of my workshop in Great Yarmouth once there were some caravan clubbers raiding the bin opposite my gateway.

Cheeky cow was even inspecting them and sorting them into two piles

All you need is a decent sized box with a lid which, when opened pulls up a “shelf” which the postie can place things on and when it closes said things drop into the box below. Dead simple and your postie will love you for it.

So the letter/parcel just drops and falls some height? Any way of minimising damage?

Bit of foam rubber or the like in the bottom of the box but doubt that final drop will be anything worse than your mail has already experienced on its journey!

A couple of feet drop in a letter box is nothing compared to the way parcels/packages get launched about at sorting offices and in courier vans
