If you remember a few pages back @pressbrake1 posted a picture of the shaft he was machining. Well, here is the shaft, finished. Just running it down for hard chrome & grinding tomorrow morning.

130mm in diameter and about 37kg down to probably 12kg (will weigh it exactly tomorrow).

Not exactly made today, it's taken a tad longer and still not finished. I still have to do some shaping on the final two into one transition and fit a 45 degree bend and V band fitting. No comments on the welding please, my old hands aren't as steady as they used to be

good morning all, just my contribution. Have had the plasma going recently to cut some 6mm 5083 to construct some pontoons for a Sydney customer

That was the last sheet to go onto the plasma. We started construction of the pontoons

And as of today about 90% completed. Just the bow and deck to weld down. Ten we start on the second one, hopefully to be completed by the end of next week

That is 7.5m long

haha, somebody gave it to the mrs. It's head has fallen off multiple times but not allowed in the bin, always has to be fixed

Nope and I tried everything. Whats worse is I cant under stand it after 2 evenings scratching my head.

Unless someone has ideas Im going to hide it far corner of the shed and do something else. This 32mm shaft er32 was a great time saver but I have the spindle mount or mt3 I can use instead.

Perhaps sharp edges on the collet act as scrapers inside the collet nut .......so push the alignment out a tiny bit .....


Her's my experience about such a thing .
My 3 yr old Chinese collet set up is a bit different as it's on a morse taper , but one thing I've found is on the 8mm collet the dead square sharp edges on the slots cut in the collet body often cause the collet nut to stick , grip because of the scraper effect on the inner faces of the collet nut for six or so threads. . It took a while to see the polished surfaces developing ( it took almost 60 plus thin copper pipes 24 mm long , held and precisely & re-shaped to 6 mm internal dia ) where it was catching .

I've only needed to use the 8mm collet in the set but suspect that filing the edges of the other seven collets will need doing to stop the scraping effect inside the collet holding nut.

It was cured by using a triangular warding file , I carefully took off all the outer sharp edges on the slots . Now everything is almost finger tight till it needs a nip of half a turn of the C spanner , everything runs true & as sweet as a nut .

That's very insightful. You could use one of those dense scotchbrite type de-burring wheels to take off the sharp edges on all of them quite quickly.

I really need a new high quality earth clamp. My Lincoln 200A one has burnt the braid out, the brass pads are in good Nick but I’m getting arcing. @Jim Davey do you sell any heavy duty spring clamps suitable for 200A?

I keep looking at the tweco ones but ESAB products have gone to crap

Popped into the workshop on the way home this evening to pic up some lenses for the Crystal and decided to make a small body ER40 cuck for the lathe from some 60mm OD EN8.
Video of the lathe doing its thing with a couple of pictures near the end of the video and testing runout with a 10mm drill in the collet.

I know I've said it before, so at the risk of being boring I'll reiterate - I love watching your machines [all of then] at work!

If you look up Gibson exhausts/Allspeed on Facebook there’s tonnes. I only weld up the specials and stainless ones now. They’ve took it back in house for most stuff.

Good idea but none of my collets have sharp edges other than the swarf they came with in the slots that is cleaned out.
The ER32's were more used back when I was cutting with veg oil and some had a layer of hardened goo, but a soak in diesel got it all off clean. Most look like they were deburred with a hammer. Not pretty, particually the ER32's but they were all accurate once. I checked my MT3 chuck and that is just as far out! Its one I have not recut, still has chinese ground finish.
Need to put my spindle mount er32 in and check that, and a size Ive never used, 17mm.

Very tempted by the er40 sets, but I started looking up er50. In theory that can go upto 42mm, not that anywhere sells them.. but 2mm range so fewer needed.
