Hello people.
I'm posting this request for advice on behalf of my brother. Prior to getting to the meat of the post, a bit of back story is probably useful.
Our Grandad was very into his motorbikes, and during his life owned various examples of what are now regarded as "the" classic British Motorcycles. My brother decided to try to obtain at least one of the bikes he owned, and restore it if neccesary.
The last bike we remember Grandad having was a BSA Bantam, this was his go to work runaround. By the time my brother and I came along in the early 70s, he'd sold all his bikes bar this one. There are lots of family pictures of my brother and I playing on the Bantam.
Long story short, my brother has obtained a Bantam which on the face of it is in reasonable nick. Stripping the engine is showing quite a few issues though.
He thinks the piston is already an oversize one. The bore reads 61.7mm in places, when it should be 61.5. It's quite oval too. On another note, the big end seems rather worn, lots of play in it.
I'm including some pictures my brother sent, with his permission.
He has a good workshop with an Emco V10P lathe and a mill.
The main question I have then is do the assembled experts believe it is possible to Rebore this in the lathe, then hone it? Or should he farm it out to a professional firm? The other option would be to try to get a decent second hand block and piston etc.
All help gratefully received.
