Is it just me or has the price of these gone through the roof recently.

@doubleboost got some from banggood . If I remember correctly he had to adjust them to make them useable so that does not make them good value.
Has anyone got a cheaper supplier?

As an alternative to holding the part in the indexing device, consider clamping the indexing device to the part:

It was actually 4 and 6 that I wanted.

Aye, I suppose that is the idea of only one coming with the set. I have ER40 holders for the Beaver Mill so if I ever required them both to be set up at the same time I could do so.

A ball bearing nut is a little bit overkill for an indexer. There isn't really a need for the extra tightening ability and there is no problem holding the blocks for applying torque to them. A slightly cheaper, standard nut is OK.

My theory was I already have an R8 -Er32 collet holder so I could use that on the indexers.

But I am also wondering if a spin indexer is a better investment. I am guessing a couple of blocks are actually more versatile though.

One of the neat improvements John made to the collet blocks was to leave a ridge at the back of the block so if you machine a tight washer you can bolt the block directly to the table in the upright position.
One thing I do know about John Stevenson was that he gave a great deal of time to the Model Engineering community freely and without caveat. When he sadly passed Neil Wyatt set up a competition in his memory for the Model Engineer community and magazine and was struggling to raise the money for the Silver trophy until some anonymous benefactor paid for it.

I was going to ask about the need for ball bearing nuts but it appears that the answer is that they have higher clamping force than a plane nut for a given tightening torque. No other advantage?

They allow more clamping force or the same clamping with less force applied but that is basically it.

I was quite surprised by how much torque is required by my cheep no name Chinese ER32 nuts, it would be worth adding one to a order next time I am shopping save moving the Drummond's bench each time I tighten the collet nut.

They are nicer to use and by the sounds of it they may be a big benefit. Then again it could just be the quality of the nut/chuck/collets you have. That can also make a big difference. Having said that the Chinese stuff nowadays seems to be of excellent quality, well for the most part anyway.

Yer, proper slow boat from China stuff which I bought a couple of years ago the quality is variable, of the twenty collets seventeen are fine, two are very tight in the nuts and one is so slack the eject ring will not pull the collet off the work.
I kind of regret not spending a little more.

The Indexa set of ER40's I bought a few weeks back is top notch and was under £100 which I thought a bargain.

The oversize ones I got a wee bit later from RDG are decent but even just picking them up you can feel the difference, they just don't feel the same quality although they do seem accurate enough.
