How much is wood in the U.K. ? Oil and gas is clearly easier, but works out more extensive over here.

Clearview pioneer, uses about one of these tubs (~16"x11" x15") of well Tetris'd, mostly softwood in a day when burning decently from lunch to bed. It's a "5kw" stove, whatever that means so let's say that for those ~8hrs it's averaging 2.5kw, so ~20kwh out of one tub (very back of the envelope).
Our total use is unmeasured and not really relevant as there are other heating sources in the mix. But when it's cold and there's not much other heat going on, I know we can do a tub a day fairly easily.
People charge £50 for a 1 tonne builders bag. Of course its only 1 tonne when full of sand. Even with hardwood you only get about 300 to 400kg.

1 meter cube when it's stacked or less? good mix of hardwood? We buy a mix of wood as oak on its own is hard to get up to heat.

Our whole place is like a night storage heater - the walls are about 2 foot thick.
Once its warm its stable - if i stoke the fire before bed, it always goes out overnight, but its no bother to get going again first thing.
Pallet wood is effort, for sure. And you could probably earn more in the time, and then just buy whatever fuel you like to burn, but, to me, most of the time, it didnt feel like too much of a chore.

though im not a lover of mixed heater and water tank being together i prefer them seperate

Whatever stove you buy, make sure it has a "Top air facility" this allows you to open a supply of air which comes out on top of the fire rather than underneath, which ensures that all the gasses and hydrocarbons coming off the wood are burned up by the preheated air being fed in over the top of the flames. I have a small woodburner with this facility and it makes a huge difference to the heat output. If you feed a woodburner from under the fire, all the heat goes straight up the flue, and the wood is burned up in no time. I light mine, and as soon as it is running well, about 5 minutes, I cut off all the bottom air and run the stove on top air only, which burns every scrap of wood more slowly, but also cleanly, and I have a hot stove but a cooler flue, and you really feel the difference!

Probably less now they are only supposed to sell dry and seasoned logs. The selling measure really does need looking at, we have the supposed one ton load which can be a one ton bag( volume), one ton pickup load ( just about anything) and everything inbetween. I only know of one guy that's honest about what he deliverers, ask him the amount and he will tell you its level load on his truck or a half load if he fits the divider, ask him what he is delivering and he will say its a mixed wood as in some hardwood with a bit of softwood mixed in, ask him the moisture content and he will just say its been in his drying shed for a year.

Don't mean to be a Debbie Downer but all this talk of burning "stuff" that's not actually just wood, have a read up on burning tanalised timber and processed timber. Like pretty much everything you get in a builders yard, a lot of pallets etc.
Not only potentially nasties in the fumes but nasties in the ash too.

burning tanalised wood stinks, is toxic and blocks the chimney.
Nowt wrong with pallets, they just burn too quick.

IPPC or whatever they're called have codes. You will find that the vast majority of pallets are stamped HT, which is entirely safe to burn.
The blue ones etc are under private ownership anyway.

I agree with this, I know a few guys who sell logs, and one in particular its just what hes cut from the trees hes pruned last summer.
Local guy in the village does softwood only, but it is well seasoned as he cuts them on the hill opposite me, and you can see the stack dwindle. Under normal times, hell spend saturday and sunday morning cutting and splitting, delviers, then spends the proceeds in the local pub. He charges 115 quid for a tipping trailer full.

I dont think its a ban, its more that wood burners and wood sold after certain dates have to comply to stricter regulations. Thats unless I have got the wrong end of the stick
