First Woodburning stove

Morning all.

My wife and I are about to have our fireplace opened up and our first woodburner installed.

I have no idea where to start with this.

We really want to keep the cost of the stove under £800.

We've been to a few shops and i've looked all over the internet and decided we like this one:

Now this is where i start to get lost.. The Penman Bassington is more expensive than the Gallery 8 Eco Here but looks the same. There is also a Capital fires Barrington Here and a Firefox Eco 8 Here.

They all look the same but why are some half the price of others? Are some built in China maybe? Any ideas which arent? and are the UK built stoves? Im not particularly bothered about it being built in the UK but i am bothered about shelling out close to £1000 on some sub-par stove built in China.

Or do you guys have any other recommendations?

Ive read this is designed and built in the UK and has a lifetime warranty on the body: Arada Ecoburn

Hope we have some stove experts here that can help?

Speak with your local hetas installer. They will know what’s what and a few have makes they won’t fit for various reasons.

my advice is to look deeper into stoves

I strongly believe there is a ban coming in on wood stoves that are a basic models in the uk

dont get me wrong here i like a wood stove myself love the look of an open fire but i do believe others outside your house should live in peace as well

many close them down so low it smokes up there chimneys and people walking around breath your crap in

I have designed a rocket stove to fit into a chimney breast but its pure heat out for very little wood usage and clean burn

i have looked and viewed at downdraft stoves there bigger than 500mm high more like 700-800mm high and yes one can be made up

but theres alot of faff with one no point in lieing about it

the truth of the matter i would be looking at clean burn and secondary air stoves

we have one for the next house.....German, prob 20 years old......
before u jump in Look at Swedish/Norw models...they're still big users...

I am in the process of getting a few quotes and every Hetas engineer i have spoken to seem to have their own agenda and state that one stove isnt very good and another engineer said it was the best etc.

dont forget they are paid to sell you what they think is the best stove

my views at the moment is clean burn and secondary air input usage

secondary air burns the gasses instead of the wood so less wood usage and storage needed only drops wood usage by a third though

The HETAS engineer that installed ours recommended choosing one with with the option for an external air intake as our chimney is on an outside wall. Seems like a good idea, otherwise you get a draught where air finds its way into the room.

Get a welded stove, not a cast one. Cast door is ok, but stay away from cast sides and top.

If youre happy to wait, keep an eye on facebook etc. A new £1000 stove becomes £400 very quickly.

ps. i considered room sealing ours, but we live in an old house with stone walls, and no damp proof course, etc. and i figured a bit of air turn over was not a bad thing.

indeed, last winter was the first time we had a normal central heating boiler installed.... and the first time we have had any issues with condensation on windows, resulting in us having to open windows anyway!

Make your own stove or there are a few on here that make them welded from real steel.

They have a cast door, but thats not the bit that takes all the heat anyway - the rest of them is welded.

Secondary air - all modern stoves will have this, unless you mean room sealed?

I dont know about the eco2022. I think both the brands i mentioned are all DEFRA'd up, so, i would assume would get the next bit of paper when it comes out?

defra is pure bs when it comes to wood stoves

more so when old stoves in old stock can still be sold built before a certain date after that date everything has to be new style wood stove

its these old stove styles that can be banned so many will end up paying double if it comes in

my truthful opinion with wood stoves should be

economy of materials how many cords of wood being used
its heat output
secondary air usage for complete combustion
output in grams ( pollution ) real world application not edited or adjusted by manufactorer whilst testing is being done

Struggling to find onne thats steel body, has all the secondary air and Defra clean burn stuff that is also pretty for under a grand.

Apparenty theyre all going up in price in April too :-(

Woodwarm, Clearview or Clock.
mall have long path airwash, double glazed and they work!! You can spend double on something fancy that doesn’t work.

I sell more used Clearview than anything (made in Shropshire) but Woodwarm (made in Devon) are a very marginally better stove

Definitely welded. We've had ours 14years no probs. My daughter has 2 welded stoves too. Absolutely no problems, remain airtight for easy control. Cast iron stoves expand and contract, as do steel, but cast are joined by bolts at the corners, the joints break down and they need rebuilding periodically. Look for a cast iron door though, for rigidity and good sealing
