inspection pit question

as most of y'all on here know I'm in the process of building a inspection pit..

I'm all sorted on all the specs bar one...

what height do i need to put the lights and other outlets (air and sockets mostly)

its the one spec that doesn't seem to be anywhere on the interwebs.....

anyone with a pit feel like cluing me in?

ones ive wired in the past were about flourescent fittings 1 foot down sunk in to the side walls and liquid proof

Air points at just above waist height is about the most comfortable place (for me) in terms of connecting/removing the couplings.
It's also a handy height to locate the hose so you can lift the tool back off the floor!

As high as possible, so IT shines into oppositi wheelarch. My father had a 30cm wide shelf dug out over full length both sides (so under the wheels of the car) very convenient.

In that case how about running a recess along one side and running the air for the beam in a length of cable chain?
Keeps it out the way of everything else and you could always mount a coupling on the inlet end at the corner and one on the jacking beam as well just in case you need it

hose over the side works fine for that, but to be fair, ive not been needing my airtools under cars for a while, i use my battery tools for most things these days and only get my air impact out for the really big stuff... none of which are under the car.

The air fittings will only serve as something to catch your overalls on as you move back and forth, with you head back and you eyes full of rust.

A normal air line run from the nearest wall when you need it will be far simpler and more practical.

I have a one block wide and high alcove/shelf on one side - light (now LED), power and air on its back wall, leaving the "shelf" bit free to put tools, nuts, bolts etc.

With my range of cars, the pit is either too deep, or not deep enough - maybe I need to work out the ground clearance required of my next car to put the bottom at the right height . . .

A mate has a pit, keeps a roll cab at one end with basic tools and has one of those kick along hop ups if he needs to get up a bit.

i use a 6 inch high long wooden board in mine if i want any shallower

Reason I asked is that my neighbour has an inspection pit, and quite a bit of water seeps in. Consider putting in a slight slope in the bottom of the pit towards a small sump recess in a corner to trap water, oil, or other fluids; it would make clean up much easier.

Put covers on immediately after or before a vehicle comes off your pit. You can forget there is a concrete hole there when doing something else, or at least I did.

Petrol vapour, CO2, lpg building up in it are also an issue, apparently. I once knew a guy whose neighbour had expired in his pit from some sort of gas or fumes accumulation.

Sad to hear that. I'm presently building a garage. No pit, but as the doors will be closed most of the time due to weather, I put in a 4" vent pipe through a wall to hook up a fume extractor.
