This one mentions 1800 lost and another one where theres 750 lost........they must be more of a problem than icebergs.....

They do sink, in time.
They also wash up ashore, then they "May be" salvaged.

Few years ago when I was serving. We had a few days in the Western Med. The 20mm and the 40/60 crews had fun putting holes in a few, as they were deemed to be a hazard.

They had fun, we had to clean the toys.

there isnt much left of them by the time they make it ashore anyway, look more like an ikea flatpack container,
we had a few wash ashore up in Orkney recently that had washed off a ship off west of orkney

There's the rub, long before they sink they are hovering about just below the surface. Not an ideal situation for anyone crossing the Atlantic in anything less than a cargo ship . I wonder how many "missing at sea" reports are really down to container strikes.

Very correct - They do "hover just below the surface".

You don't wanna be hitting one of them in a GRP sailing yacht.


On a different note: Last time I was on a cruise ship in the Med - you wanna see the plastic debris and blue plastic drums floating about - really it was shocking!

On a different note: Last time I was on a cruise ship in the Med - you wanna see the plastic debris and blue plastic drums floating about - really it was shocking!

Id rather hit one on a GRP yacht than wood, or steel, a well built Grp is extremely strong.

The plastic debris is obscene, at least when drums were steel, bash a few holes in them and they sink then rot.

Hi, I remember that thousands of these washed ashore years ago having gone into the drink in one ocean and washing ashore in another.

I believe they do it deliberately now to further map ocean currents.

I would imagine that often the contents keep them afloat till they rust enough to let a few boyant shoddy pastic items out then they sink. The rest of the contents will surface in good time when the rest rusts away.

An old mate of mine was engineer on the Galatea trawler out of Hull and recalled that they used to haul them half aboard with the tackle winch and open them looking for goodies.................., then sink them! flotsam and jetsam rules apply

I very much doubt that they'll rust significantly in the next 100 years. Most of them end up as reefs.

Containers are made of Corten in the man, I don't know how fast they will rust away.

Made of content steel as @northwest says so it be a very long time before they rust out. Usually no vents and are completely watertight so if they fall overboard and the doors don't get ripped open in some way they can float around for a good long while.

salt water is very good at corrosion....hence Marine Grade Stainless (316L)
Corten rusts a nice colour but it still rusts....I believe that the manufacturers advise painting it in coastal areas

The 40' I used for storage had a small vent at high level in each corner, just a bunch of 10mm ish holes with a plastic shroud on the outside. I tried to fish a small cable through for the solar panel but there was some kind of trap in the plastic shroud, I guess some kind of insect trap. Ended up just drilling a hole straight out.
