Anyone else look back & think about things they've had?

We were talking about bikes & cars at work today. I don't really get emotionally attached to anything really!

I do know that alot of my hand tools will be with me until I can no longer use them though

Not really, I'd sell anything I own for the right price, it's only stuff. Occasionally I find myself needing something I've sold, and buy another one. I doubt I've made a loss over the years in having to do this when I add up all the stuff I've sold that i didn't need.

I still have hand tools (e.g. Stanley hand drill) which were bought for me as a small boy (I'm 63 now) and also lots of stuff which was used by my dad even many years before that. They are amongst my most treasured possessions because of the memories they bring back.

Having said that, I agree that it is just 'stuff' and that you can't take it with you.

Re. vehicles - I don't get attached to them but I do tend to use them as a marker as for when certain events in my life took place - e.g. 'that was when we had the white van' and so on. I don't swap my vehicles too often so it works!

I've tried to sell my MR2 half a dozen times....usually it starts with a wash and vacuum....then there's the test drive to make sure that it's ready for the new owner. Thats as far as I've got with it in 20+ years!

I do regret selling my Celica...was a cracking low mileage car. It hurts even more that it was sold locally so I see it every so often.

Ime 60 years of age in a month or two and if everything was put into my lap today what i have owned including rental portfolios,cars,bikes tools and machines including all my toys like boats etc then i would swap everything down to the last brick,stick and bolt to buy back the last 20 years and go back to 40 years old You young guys on here have the greatest gift of all of us and that is your youth so make sure you spend it wisely and don't squander the years

I do like hanging on to my tools, Still have a set of open ended Stahlwille A/F spanner that I bought on the "weekly" sixty years ago, They have done some work over the years and never flinched, their motto, "stronger than any bolt"

Everything I’ve owned was of it’s time and belongs there, yes I’d love one or two of the cars I’ve owned but they were nothing special. The only things I still have from my youth are my Snap-On box and tools (apart from the ones no.2 son spirited away), my first job offer letter and my wife.

There's only one thing I regret selling. My custom kite buggy and race kites

Wasn't through choice. Ripped off by a scum landlord when I first moved back to the uk and had to sell the kites to stay solvent.

Yoof is wasted on the young. I used to think you should retire at 21 for 25 years, to enjoy it, then start work? Now aim retired I changed my mind!

Rebuilt my Lancia integrale with the intention to flog it and pay some of my mortgage off . . . drove it . . . turned down an offer 12 grand more than I paid for it 16yrs ago . . . didn't flog it. . .that was 4 yrs ago . . . its makes me smile sitting still . . . worth it for that alone.

My mrk 4 golf i regret parting with. I'm quite a sentimental person. I had to trade the golf in otherwise if it had stayed any longer it would have stayed permanently. Got a good price for it though for an 18 year old car £1200. Which i couldn't complain about. Still missing it though. My first car my series 3 landy will stay with me for ever.

Tools my grandpas tools are very sentimental things to me and the shifter my gran gave me the money for on the advice of my great uncle Jim when I passed my engineering officer of the watch ticket. Other tools um a bit so so on them some of them have grown on me but ill use any tool if it gets the job done.

I rarely part with anything, on the premise that it will probably come in handy one day.
The only downside to that approach is storage.
