Found a place to store the bits until needed!!!! Down the pit! Some welding required!! Will update with welding metal bashing pics later ,gonna completely strip chassis for repair so no upside down welding,

Interesting one.

It has SIII wings, gearbox & handbrake.

The very latest SIIa had the headlights in the wings, but that would have been K or L reg.

Do you have headlights in the radiator panel?

It's got the narrow Series III sills, flush door hinges and on a J Plate too - it's a Series III, you're slipping!

An interior shot will show instruments in front of the steering wheel I'm sure!

My M reg is '74 so J is '71. SIII production started in '71 so could be SIII or late SIIa. (I miscounted backwards in my last post!)

I've blown the picture up and lightened it, the bottom hinge isn't very clear but it looks like the old style to me.

It's a SII/IIa heater too.

Are those sills the narrow ones?

Hi It is according to the VIN plate a 2A registered in June 71 the wings are 2a as it has the flat smiths heater and an all metal/rust bulkhead and dash the instrument panel is in the centre ,it started life as a diesel and it had the opening in the wing inner for the exhaust and it still has the heater resistor on the bulkhead,the chassis is slightly different to the S3 , sills are the narrow ones and the hinges are S2 not flat like S3 ,the gearbox is S2 with the cranked clutch lever arrangement and no synchro on 1st/2nd thanks for reading

ive been working on landrover/rangerovers for 18 years both for on road and off road both standered and moddified,,,

I see you've put the engine on a stand already.
I found they're great for re-assembly but not so good for stripping engines. You're best to crack the crank pulley bolt and head bolts before removing the engine from the car.

Hi Thanks for that Stormin, I just need to invert the engine to replace the rear crank seal,looking at the approx cog i think i will have to use the gantry to support the weight while I turn it,all a learning curve as I havent done this before!!

An air impact gun may come in handy or failing that a hammer on the end of an old spanner or short breaker bar. The shock should do the job as you've not got a fixed engine to lever against.

Chassis on "spit" for cleaning up and welding previous welding evident,just hope mines gonna be a bit better,standby for an emergency call Dusty!All indoors and at a comfy level with no upsidedown problems,will post when more progress or cockups are made,still gotta get the steering relay out,the rust seems stronger than some of the welding!!

The rust round the relay will be stronger than most of the welding

To be honest it may be best to rebuild it in-situ.

Too late now I know, but last time I had to remove a relay I placed the jack on the end of the box, lowered the whole weight of the LR onto it, soaked in Plusgas and left it for a couple of days - repeating Plus Gas treatment every 12 hours or so. Eventually there was a loud bang and it popped out!

They aren't easy. Here's a picture showing the structure for reference. There's a rusty sleeve inside the chassis all the way around the relay.

Wondering why you aren't going for a nice new galv chassis on yours - much more fun than all that welding.
