I didn't have to do a test but I think it's a good thing. My eldest has done his theory and has a driving test booked. He will be wanting to do the trailer test soon after he passes. Once you take away the speed aspect I don't see how it can be argued it's more difficult than the trailer loads of big bales/muck he's been hauling down country lanes with a tractor all summer(He's got a tractor license). He can reverse a trailer as well as anyone I know but a test is still a good thing.

I'd be willing to be if the trailer test and training was more accessible people would be more inclined to take it, and hopefully learn something, and not just "risk it". £500 is ridiculous.
That said the standard of driving seems woeful these days and seems to have got worse since lockdown, too many people barely seem to cope with driving a car.
On the other hand those are probably going to be the same people who won't bother to check rating plates, balance and secure a load or learn how to reverse a trailer.

I can confirm that legislation was passed to enable drivers holding a provisional B + E, to drive on the motorway.
This is permissible as you will have already passed a test in category B.
The amending legislation was the Motorways Traffic (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 1996. (SI1996 No.3053).
You will need to display L plates whilst driving as a provisional driver.

I understand what you are saying but you more likely to get yourself in bother towing than driving a 7.5t. That rig probably isn't too far away from limits on a 2006 Kia Sorento

What would it cost to hire a car & trailer for two days?
Would that include the fuel?
Or unlimited insurance with no excess or charges if you damage the car or trailer inc tyres or paint work?
No risk to your NCB record.
Have a one to one coach for about 12 hours? (what would a personal trainer charge for an hour?)
Never mind the £115 DVSA test fee.
Plus you get a life skill (if you choose the right trainer not one that just teaches you to not fail).

The way the driving test in the UK operates, people are thought to pass a test, learning to drive happens after the test if the person so wishes.
Most people lack experience in different situations, you pass your test and can jump straight in a 200bhp golf and forget you need indicators.
I don’t know the answer but if for instance anyone wanting to pass the driving test had to ride 1000 miles on a 50cc moped and then spend the year after their test driving a 1000cc 4 speed metro, they would have a much different perspective.

yeah well, thats kinda my point, just because the car and trailer bends in the middle doesn't suddenly make it harder to drive that a 15 ton box wagon with a MAHHHOOOSIVE tail swing....
not to say i disagree with the trailer test, i think its a good idea, but i do think if you have cat d or cat c, you should get B+E after a instructor assesses you for lets say, half a day. (longer if the assessor deems it necessary)

That is the old way.
Now ADI's should be teaching far more, sadly some dont still but it is improving.
The main reason its only getting better slowly is PARENTS.
PARENTS actually care more about money than their kids.
They think that you can learn to drive in 5 to 10 hours.
Any more & the ADI is ripping you off.
Roads are different & people are different.

HOW MUCH to pass.

Why not just go take the test then if its no different?
