Anyone watching Cobra Kai ....it's the follow up to the karate kid films.

Why is it relevant....well in the 1980s when I watched the film's it was good Vs bad.

The latest series is a lot more nuanced and you see the reasons why people behaved the way they did.

Still got wax on/wax off...paint the fence

Yes indeed, the wife and I have been enjoying the series recently. It really is a wake up call to pre judging people!

Definitely....turns out the bad kid wasn't so bad after all.

I live in west London in a nice part...people often say how "lucky" I am....I actually grew up in t'north in an industrial wasteland during the 1980 surrounded by mass unemployment. Choices we basically to follow everyone else....or pack my bags and leave....I did the latter. Wasn't an easy journey I can tell you!

That's one of the strange things about humans often they have no drive to change. It's quite a common thing that peoples environment/upbringing affects their future by why do so many people repeat the cycle? Why don't those people think "I'm going to do what I can to not live in poverty"

We see migrant workers come to the UK with barely more than the shirts on their back and build lives from nothing because they are prepared to do any job available.

I'm blessed with the mentality to up sticks and leave be it a job area or country if I think it's better for me (now me and my family)
I'm still talking the wife into leaving this country. I'd be gone already if I was still single. Regret coming back

We see SOME migrant workers come to the UK with barely more than the shirts on their back and build lives from nothing because they are prepared to do any job available. You should visit some areas of Sheffield and Rotherham where certain have established a foothold......vast majority have no intentions of working. They steal and scrounge and the council set up drop in centres to teach them how to get benefits.

I'm getting there too myself...been looking at Portugal and Malta recently [Spain is out....i don't want a house with bars on the windows]. I can't really see the point of staying in the UK....by the time I retire I suspect the pension I supposedly paid for during my working life will be worthless anyway.....and anything I've managed to save will be taxed heavily in the name of fairness...and the greater good.....getting to the point where I think just cut my losses now.

NZ is a very good choice....beautiful place too.

The UK has big issues coming as the boomers go through retirement and the birth rate has declined....tax weight will have to fall somewhere and lets face it....nobody will vote for less....so the system will be weighted towards the ages with the largest numbers for many decades to come.

I seem to have been lucky over the years with my choice of employers. The work was enjoyable, the pay good and the bosses treated the workforce well, in most instances. The last time I claimed the dole was back in the late 70s when I moved back home from Gloucester and had to spend a short while job hunting.

I've always believed in giving back what you get so, if the firm treated me well then I'd put in a hard day's work, irrespective of the hours. I'm now retired but that ethic has stayed with me. Lockdown was frustrating because we had to close our local Men's Shed but having re-opened around a fortnight ago, life has more or less returned to normal and I'm back doing what I enjoy doing.

Had last job for 22 years up til July now on job seekers and told that only til Feb 2021 as my Nat Ins will run out then! First time in career to be out of work and nobody currently hiring, no idea how to work benefits system so I get £75 per week

Was furloughed until July , depression and anxiety now kicked in loads of projects no mojo and a fear of spending money on projects ,

On a more positive note to this thread I've just accepted a new job offer for when I get back to the UK

Less hours than I was previously working, The pay isn't terrible + other benefits like private healthcare

Just happy to have a change in my working career & have an income again!

This is where the system falls down as it is supposed to support those that need it rather than chose it.

if you've not already then speak to everyone you pay money out to such as utilities, mortgage, council tax and let them know you’re not working and receiving benefits. It’s surprising how many offer reduced rates

The above is good advice - take it - you have plenty of time to do something positive - any saving will make the money you have got go further. Real positive step...
