Have just had to bin my Starrett square as it’s way out of true - any recommendations please? Needs to be about 250mm

starrett , or Moore and Wright , I tend to buy older ones from e bay for welding ,,, but true them up myself .

Ive seen some one on you tube using a square with a body about twice as thick as normal and they look handy.

Rabone , probably wrongly spelt are good if your after a chap ish adjustable square , ..
I have one of those with a hole drilled in the edge and I use it as a marking gauge a lot of the time , with a pencil and its really handy

I buff the corners off too , sorts that out , usually about half an inch off , so it clears weld too , very handy

there will be machinists in tears by now ,,, sorry , but thats why I buy them old and second hand.

for the right money I’d let it go but shipping to Orkney would be a killer as it’s weighs upwards of 30kgs.

I bought a set of 4 from an MSC offer leaflet, probably best part of 20 years ago. Still have 3 of them.
Was about £20 for the set, 4",6",9",12".
Still used day in day out, and true.
Been used to lever, scrape, earth, hammer... and still managed to be acceptable for calibration.
Think I even used them as a square a few times too.

R-tech import them. Made in USA. The body is alloy, not steel, so IMO you're better off with a Starret, M&W etc for a steel body and more precision... but it's a nice bit of kit regardless. I bought my brother one last christmas.
When even M&W are going down the nick quality wise, may as well have one of these, and a fixed blade engineers square when precision is needed.

I have checked the MSC squares out of the box and they are spot on mine were less than 0.02 against a calibrated reference square
