Got fairing out again for a bit more ABS repair, there was a crack I hadnt seen and wanted to put more meat in a few areas. It will look much better when its sanded smooth!
As you can see I didnt have enough clamps, had some G clamps but far too heavy.

Had to make a new one of these, it is a tiller arm for a boat that is up the slipway.

First was to cut the arms from 20mm thick steel with the plasma.

Then into the bandsaw with a lump of 210mm diameter EN8 and chopped a bit 130mm long.

Put the arms into the Chiron.

Milled out the slot and the bore to the correct dimensions.

Whilst the Chiron was doing them I loaded the EN8 into the lathe and started turning it to size, OD is 205 and there is a step down to 152mm for the first 20mm for the arm to fit on.

Put some soft jaws on the chuck and bored them out to size and then loaded the EN8 the other way round so I could machine the other end.

Got that completed but still have to bore out the centre to 2.1/2" but that will have to wait until tomorrow.

Lighting in the last picture is a bit poor, but we're happy with how it looks frees up some cupboard space for her cookery books, which frees up space on the windowsill by the sink, which pleases me greatly.

Was round playing grass cutter for the folks today so didn't make as much progress as I would have liked, but it's coming together. Really just need to wind the nuts on to the correct position on the big bolts to correctly position the middle flange then I can get it welded up. Hopefully get that done tomorrow so I can take it to work for my next shift, run it through the bead blaster to clean it up then give it a few coats of paint. Today was just drilling and threading for the 8 little stainless capheads.

I don't have a more recent pic but I got this welded up (as much as was needed) as well yesterday so it just needs a few finishing touches and some cleanup + some paint on the base plate.

I'll need to work out how I'm going to mount it all too. Think it might end up being some oak worktop offcuts I've got. Need to work that bit out yet.

I wanted a knee ascender but didnt fancy having an elastic so I've adapted a cheap Chinese foot ascender.

Just a brummel splice and a whoopie for the adjustment, ill know tomorrow if it is a success.

Don’t worry, I like browsing this forum but half the time it’s like watching a foreign language channel and trying to figure out what’s happening from the pictures. Then someone comes along with the subtitles and I’m no wiser but it still looks impressive

Been silly busy, so very little time to play with my toys. I did have to make a leather stamping tool for a customer’s gunbelt. I made the executive decision to just replace the whole belt, so had to copy the pattern already on the holster, so I quickly knocked out the relevant tool from a bit scrap. I should have made the shank longer, but it was still fine to use as it was.

I’ve also had water runoff problems in my garden, and it was starting to damage my driveway too. It bothered me enough to dig a big trench in front of my shed, and will fill it with Lanark stone aggregate. This is the biggest bit of the job, but I have a couple more drainage holes to dig to connect (hopefully) to the original drainage. Very heavy, and wet clay soil in there, but the work is proving its worth already.

Several years ago I replaced the wooden tops on a workmate lookalike with some 130 x 10 flat edged with 25mm sq. bar. When opened out fully it's made a perfect stand for my bandsaw. I recently knocked up this stop for a job I needed to do quickly. As the stop was made from 25 x 5 flat, I knew it would flex too much, so a replacement was planned.

I decided to make the improvement using some old handrail and some random bits of galvanised flat I acquired from somewhere. The pads opposite to the 25mm square brings the tube sleeve up to the same level. I welded fishplates to the pads and bolted the sleeve to them so I can dismantle the entire thing if I want to revert to using the workmate as a vice/table.

Luckily the tube mount for the stop was a perfect fit in the sleeve (after scraping of a few years worth of paint). The actual stop was stiffened with a small knee brace and some 10mm sq. bar which has eliminated most of the unwanted flexing.

A closer view below. I still have enough tube left to fit a longer bar and even to extend that with an additional sleeve if the need ever arises.

It may not score many points for looks, but plenty for functionality, as far as I'm concerned

Yeh, part of a torque tube. The bolts in the first one are from an aircraft as well. All parts that have been scrapped.

Brummel splice is a type of self locking splice very universal only anygood on hollow ropes

A whoopie is a self locking locking adjustable loop.

The idea being i have a foot ascender on one foot and another ascender on the other leg about knee height, this allows me to take walk up the rope.


Well i tried it today and it was a huge success, taking 6" steps per leg i just walked up the rope with next to no effort.

Just cut some test pieces for now, haven't decided on a final design yet but it'll be somewhere between a Lattice rung and a Beastmaker. Don't have a router so I'm not proud to admit I cut those slots on the milling machine.

Finally got the gates installed, I’m quite pleased with them

Got a bit more done to the tiller arm in between doing other jobs.

Got the 2.1/2" hole bored.

Put it into the Chiron and bored and counter bored the holes for the cap screws then welded on the arms. I am a bit out of practice stick welding steel, been over a year since I did any

Once welded I put it into the bandsaw to split it.

I have the rear section set up on the Chiron now ready to cut the keyway but an emergency job came in so it will have to wait until tomorrow.

At mid day I nipped round to a boat to weld on the rollers I made up the other week, hopefully they will solve the problem.
The rope will now enter the sheaves much further round and thus increase the grip, well that is the theory, will no doubt get a text tomorrow to tell me if it is working
