Change to Code process

So yesterday I got the man in to put us through our codes again . I had the lad practicing for at his overhead and vertical mig and stick. Usual two bits of 10mm plate tacked at the back in the vice , fillet weld blah blah easy peasy . In comes the man clutching test pieces...not plate , 100mm box ,10mm wall 75mm long and 10 mm plate .
Tack box to plate , put it in vice and weld around it , this means you now do your overhead , vertical and downhand all in one go . So a warning to those coming up for renewal ...it's changed . I think for the better , I preferred it to needing to do separate tests , it lasts for 3 years now as an added bonus .

Are you allowed to change settings for the overhead, to vertical and then in the horizontal position?

Yes you can use any settings you wish . It's all about leg length and fusion . Three runs round the thing , mark a couple of stop start points , job done . I started on the overhead halfway along pushed round the corner about an inch into the vertical , turned down the setting and picked up the leg and went to the top , then the same in the other direction . Quick rub with the wheel and laid down the second , then third run . Downhand ...I was told not to bother , once he saw my overhead and vertical he said " skip the top run , the other runs cover it , and you ain't gonna fail with those welds ."

In some ways it's more difficult ...corners haha ..now coded for corners

This comes under the new 9606 standard I believe.

It is interesting, I’d probably be more comfortable making a separate 4F, 3F and 2F fillet than going round the box.

could you pm me the guys details and rough cost I’ll have to look into this as I need the CSCS card

I think it’s under 9606, I know they was trying to simplify the process instead of doing three different joints, but to be honest I thought it was only in relation to BSEN1090

It's something to do with bringing ASME and BS together and making them so similar there is no difference ....from what I could tell .

You should have seen the panic and sweat form on the young fella , when what I had him practice at the previous day ,wasn't what he was going to be doing . I had to go first while he did some deep breathing exercises

Can I ask where this guy was from (feel free to PM me)? It’s more than odd.
Was the guy even an actual welding inspector? What standard did he say it was to?

I should be able to show you the Zurich paperwork tomorrow , he said the lab tests should all be done by then and emailed to me . He is an inspector ,he has to be , we are BSi kite mark carrying company that works on rail , military, nuclear etc , all the hoops need to be jumped to do anything for us , takes 2 months of checks and forms to sell us a M12 lock nut haha

Makes sense when you think about it, given that the test should be based as close to real world as possible, if you're welding thick RHS its no different to welding other beams onto pads etc.

BUT is it Zurich's WPS or is it your own company's? Because you can't re-test on RHS-to-plate on a WPS stating plate-to-plate. It's a new WPS from Zurich, surely.

I see our codes need renewed ...

I gain a purchase request from the accounts dept

I get an order number .

I contact the man from the welding supplies company who sells me consumables , tests our extraction systems and does our codes

I tell him what I need , we agree a date .

He sends a quotation with order number attached

He comes and we do the thing , codes , consumables , whatever it is .

He sends an invoice , that gets matched with the quote

That all gets sent to accounts

I get a call or email asking if all goods or services were received .

I say yes ....he gets paid .

That's all I know

I've actually just looked at our 9606-1 certs for pipe and it is tied to our 15614 WPS record number.
I know the welder himself doesn't really need to see the WPS much but should certainly be au fait with it before a test... I've always made sure our lads get a look anyway.
We only have a few WPS and few people qualified so its not too hard for us to manage.

I just get sent the bit that I laminate and stick to the wall . Whatever else there is goes to qualifications and training dept to be put on my file .

Out of 2000 employees , there are only 4 of us holding positional codes . Two young fellas , a fabricator and me .
We mainly just stick excavators and buckets back together , we really have no need for codes . It's just the company going belt and braces over the top . I point blank refuse to spend a day out on site welding beams , they want someone to do that , they get someone to do that ...but it ain't gonna be me that's not what I want to do . I keep diggers and attachment's working efficiently .

I am honestly a bit shocked that Zurich have done this, it’s not following the standard! What’s the point in having standards if they aren’t going to be followed even by a company like Zurich. Does your company hold a procedure for this? Who do you get audited by and do you have any kind of welding co-ordination there?
I’m sure they charged a fortune for this as well?!
