Again, you have a very narrow view. TD5 is a superb engine, horrendous on fuel but it is usually pulling a fair old brick. My modern 2.5 only gets 26 to the gallon loaded up

Plus, 5 cylinder with straight pipe sounds awesome and really, that's all that matters

I've said it before, 2 types of people in the world. Those who like land rovers and those who are wrong

I just see too many of them with issues , there were too many ideas in the td5 that didnt work properly , maybe not land rovers on their own at that generation , the common rail thing was new and no one really knew the pitfalls of it , but not putting a heater plug in 5 for example as there wasnt room , then expecting all the extra diesel used in cold starting not to wash the bore was silly , still , whats done is done . Brain issues seem to be the problem of late , and second hand ones are getting expensive. oil up the loom and back to the brain isnt really a problem any more as there is a loom mod out thats cured that , but fuel pressure issues are rife granted we live in the land of washed diesel too , which they also wont stand but not much does , another reason I put 2t in everything on the bright side , you dont get laundered petrol. put the td5 in a disco and its thirsty yes and the boot floor will rot out and the guards , and the sun roof /s if fitted will leak but its not the end of the word.
However in a defender compounded with the rest of its problems , and it just makes a bad day worse , why any one would actually go out and buy that combination is totally beyond me.
If you want a 5 that sounds nice buy a t5r volvo ,,, ideally an estate . Now that is a fun thing to drive.

yep , and hes a fan ,,, and still cant find much good to say about them . Britanic landrovers , or something similar ... at least hes honest about things , usually.

I’m totally with Tom on this

Iv worked on every kind of 4x4 over the years from series 1 rebuilds to the most modern GWagens

jape will outlive a Land Rover every day of the week but the interiors are awful. A Land Rover is better off road in the really rough stuff

if it was my money I’d be looking at an Ldv convoy low roof or a ford galaxy 130ps 1.9tdi there cheaper than the vws or seats and better quality interiors

other than that it would be a Toyota hiace. Been using the bosses one this weekend and it’s a 3.0tdi that’s so fast just has an annoying suspension knock from the front left that’s been checked a dozen times and no one can find it

Absolutely spot on...whats the point of a 4x4 that can't be fixed in the middle of nowhere....or even worse is physically capable of driving but the computer says no!

The Volvo V70 is a bit like this too....OK it's a lot better made to begin with....but to fix a V70 P2 you basically have to be a computer engineer who also knows how to use a spanner!

My V70 kept stalling....even the computer said there was a catastrophic fuel problem....turned out the filter was a bit blocked so the computer thought the sudden drop in pressure could only possibly be a fuel leak...and shut the engine off!

...half the time these problems are created by lazy engineers and designers. It takes a smart person to design something simple that does the job

Uncomfy, very bad fuel economy, very very unreliable.

Saying all that it’s never missed a beat this last 10 weeks!! Probably will need recovered when I get back to work

Its a bit like me and the old bikes, i love them, but am under no illusion as to the amount of maintenance they need and the fact they are not going to be as reliable as modern stuff. But at least if they do go wrong, i have a chance of fixing it roadside, and have done.

I’m not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but have maintained all my older cars

with the current one I need a NASA supercomputer to wind the rear calliper pistons in to change the pads, every bloody 15,000 miles

Our sharan was a last resort to go modernish as the family grew the old estate with lap belts was no longer capable without 3 x 3 point belts,it’s the only car I’ve tried in recent times that I can drive for more than 2 hours without aches and pains,as it’s more van like,we’ve driven to the alps and back,with 2 hour sleep breaks,in comfort.
I refuse to service it as it’s stupidly confined,done a few accessible repairs,that could’ve been expensive in a dealers,that’s my limit,fuel consumption is reasonable,practical but bland,only had consumables replaced.

How big are the very rear seats? I wonder it the dogs cage would fit in the boot?

I think 4x4`s should be taken out of the equation unless you actually need one. There are so many good 2wd van derived wagons out there that are both economical to run,comfy and nice to drive. Personally with @winchman `s budget I would be taking a good look at VW offerings.

Thanks Bob, we dont need a 4x4 as I have the P38 for poor weather and my best toy, the Picasso I have had for 6 years fits the bill perfectly but its only 5 seats

Thats perfection sadly very poor on fuel.
I get 45MPG now and whilst I do realise its going to go down thats too much of a drop
