I have no problem with putting the lid down, mainly for aesthetics (and to stop the nagging!), but I always flush with the lid up. I want to make sure I'm not leaving any surprises for the next user. Unless I have deliberately dropped a few Maltesers in the bowl!

I fixed myself, put the flusher behind the seat just as thats where it fitted

I can’t stand beetroot either, but my friend loves it. He had grown a load in the garden & mad a pig of himself with them. Went out around town later & needed a comfort stop. Stood at the urinal, pee glowing bright red as is does from the beetroot, the guy further down the trough looked absolutely horrified & says “for gods sake go to the doctor”

They've been saying for years if you don't want an aerosol of turd on your toothbrush get the lid down. Having said that is hasn't done any harm to millions of people over the years.

Ok flushing can propel some microscopic droplets out of the bowl, but:
A very tiny minority of the population are in the infectious stage of batflu, so the risk is correspondingly tiny.

However every human on the planet has on average a kilo of bacteria in their guts, including many which can make you ill ( for us, usually just Delhi belly type symptons.. but in the 3rd world, millions of babies and kids die from diarrhoea caused by faecal contamination of water supplies, lack of clean washing water, and culturally poor hygeine practices).

Personally I stand clear and watch the flush, as I leave the heads clean for the next guy.

(I arrived at Bombay airport once and we were delayed disembarking, I was busting for a No.2 after the in-flight 'catering' provided by Syrian-Arab Airlines. Entered the airport traps and I had to STAND atride the toilet bowl, to keep clear of the reeking Mount Everest of of Richard the 3rds, I can see why most Indians prefer to go in the fields..)

I flush before use if some fool has p'd without flushing, trying to "save water" even though millions of tons of water fall out of the sky every week..

Its disgusting in an Airport........there should be International Standards

Mind you they still have the "stand up...hole in ground" toilets in France......especially in some of the older Motorway Aires in rural spots.....Im told some of the older French prefer them.......

I appreciate that traditionally, our oriental counterparts are vertically challenged compared to us, but 36" as an average for the race? I think not. Also, I doubt we have much to fear from CV reaching our waists.....
