Emails Changing over to Sky

My wife has decided that we will be better off going for a complete TV, internet & phone package with SKY
. It seems I can't take my BT internet address over with me unless I pay £ 7 a month .

I understand there are the likes of Gmail that are free , can you use a unique address or do Gmail generate what you can use?

Which other email providers are there kicking around ?

@gmail, @mail, @hotmail or any of the others allow you to choose your own email name (the bit before the @) but obviously if someone else has already taken that one then you will have to get something different. Often just adding a number or two after what you want is enough to allow you to get it.

Another option is to have your own domain, the part after the @ symbol. Yes it costs, but you'll have control over it if that matters to you. I decided to do this after 2 email providers went bust, and I'm not sure I want google reading my emails before I do.

I use gmail and hotmail, both free and plenty of space. I just use my initials and second name same on both.

Definitely the way to go. A tenner a year, sometimes free for 12 months. You choose the domain name and can point that anywhere you like. Domain is yours for as long as you want it.
Point it at your Sky email address initially, when you realise what you are spending with Sky you can point it to whoever else you choose next. You don't need to pay for email hosting unless you want to use the host's mailboxes and servers.

You can also have anything you like before the @, it all ends up at the destination. It's very useful for SPAM tracking and individual addresses on your domain can be barred if they get abused.

There are lots of domain providers, I use 1&1 because I like their web interface but there is plenty of competition.

One thing I have found is @gmail seems to have a limit to the size of attachment, so far @mail has not been a problem for me in that respect. I have both @gmail and @mail accounts.

I have about live 6 accounts at the moment.
I use a different one for Amazon, eBay, Freecycle, Facebook, Gumtree, Friends, etc etc.
I set up 'office holder' accounts for each Club I hold office in, so it's easier to hand over to my successor.
Sometimes set up a new account and matching account on eBay etc for a specific item.

No 1 son set up a family domain ages ago so that one is the 'prime' one for family, on-line banking etc

Probably a lot were like me, started off with Internet on dial up and pay as you go with Freeserve and you didn't have anything like gmail at the time.
I had to change to gmail a year or so back when EE scrapped their email addresses so that was my original freeserve, my wanadoo and my orange emails all dead

It really depends what the situation is I have found.
I used to use mailtraq to collate all my emails into one place.
Then along came Gmail and I started using an email for the Chinese guys company as I was running tech support and listings etc etc. Only thing I did not do was ship items. Although I did deliver replacement s as my motto was customer service was king..... Sadly his wife did not like that so along with the shill bidding and fake CE markings, no earth's connected to heat presses , stopping testing items after they came of the ship etc I told them I had found out about and told them to stop they conived to kick me out owing around 40k Commision
So out of spite I refused to let them use my email from Gmail. And as we were using an array with name(number).gmail.com it caused them major issues so I still use it.

I stopped using my westmidland-internet emails out of convenience. When I was forced to let mailtraq go due to be security as hosts not playing ball with it and I have yes to find a decent alternative mail server.
I use dropbox a lot.
So file size in Gmail is not really an issue.

I now use iCloud, works on all my devices

I needed a simple solution as I’m a dumbass with all this technology palaver

I had my own website with a large number of emails addresses tied to my domain name for a dollar way back in 1988/89 .. they got to wanting £ 3000 pa. to host the site and run all manner of crap I had no intention of using so I let it lapse .

Currently with BT it is our choice main generic BT .com with up to five (?) sub addresses ending in BT.com . tied to the main address . .

I also have an " outlook .com " address … that might be transferable .

Just checked out the " outlook " thing... It's out of the Microsoft stable ..... should be able to use it without any problem .
